Arguably Searle's best start of the year (too lazy to go through and check, but has to be up there). 6.2 shutout, 4 h, 1 bb, 8 K's, 7:5 GO/FO. Granted, the QC lineup looks fairly weak.

If Nate's around, can someone check with him on what Searle's velocity for the game was? I'm very curious considering the mediocre reports that had come out this year.

Brandon May with 2 hits and a double. Still seems like his best case is to develop into a utility player.

Brett is 2-3 with a homer, a walk, and a K.......Rusin had a very economical start, 6IP 8H 2R 2ER 0W 4K, threw 71 pitches, 52 for strikes.......

On a side note, Brandon Guyer is 3-4 with a homer and 2 steals.......He's having a VERY solid season. To be honest, I actually think he may be of more longterm help for the big league club than Colvin will be........

A friend of mine worked for the Newport Gulls and saw Brandon May in person. According to him, May should have a good enough bat to get him to the majors, but he has periodic issues with making contact and defense. Still, he really liked the Cubs taking him in the 36th round.

I know I'm stating the obvious but Tennessee is completely stacked.

Yeah, they're incredible. They have a great lineup plus Carpenter, Archer, Dolis, and Rusin all in the starting rotation. That's sick. Plus they barely have any fillers.

Also, I'd like to see Canzler and Snyder get some starts at 1B to see how they do. I think they could both at least match Lee's production if we don't sign a good FA.

get some starts in the bigs or the minors? much as i am intrigued by russ' season, probably too early for him to jump to the majors now.

I meant in the minors before the season ends...although they only have a few games left, don't they? They were just two guys that came to mind who could probably hit enough to fill it at 1B if we couldn't find a better FA option.

Canzler has primarily been a 1B in his minor league career so I don't think it's too big a deal for him to get a lot of starts.

It's good to see Wes Darvill and Marcos Perez recover in Mesa after struggling with Boise.

Luis Liria was tremendous in the start for Mesa too. He's had a great season thus far in the AZL and he's 20 so I'd love to see him get bumped up to Boise.

Some combination of LaHair, Canzler, Hoffpauir, and Snyder probably could yield replacement level production out of 1B. However, that's not much of an upgrade from Lee this season, if at all.

It would, however, be a big downgrade in money. I think a Canzler/Snyder or Canzler/Colvin platoon could be pretty effective, with Colvin/Snyder also serving as 4th OF and Canzler as backup 3B. And if we could use the saved money to upgrade elsewhere, I think it's a win. My preference is still to sign Dunn for 1B though.

Setting aside that I'm very skeptical that some combination of LaHair, Canzler, Hoffpauir, or Snyder could be all that useful, especially at 1B, where do you go with that extra savings? If Ramirez is back, then the only other spot where there isn't an incumbent is 2B. I guess if you wanted a SP that's an option too, but we're losing Lilly's money as well.

My original thought was just as a backup plan in case we can't sign and upgrade for 1B and don't resign Lee. Canzler/Snyder or Canzler/Colvin is the best in house option I can think of.

To be blunt, it's not a good option. This team needs all the help it can get on offense, but I really don't see where that saved money could go to help the offense aside from 1B (unless Ramirez leaves).

Yeah, there really isn't a whole lot else to spend the money on. Cliff Lee is about the only non-1B free agent that would help us a whole lot - maybe Hawpe if we trade Fukudome and the Rockies don't pick up the option (this coming after I spent about 3 minutes looking at the list of free agents, so I may have missed some). Dunn is easily number 1 on my wish list. I was basically just thinking out loud about what the best in house option would be and not really thinking about the big picture.
