As a starter this season, Samardzija is 1-0 with a 0.98 ERA in 18.1 innings over 4 starts allowing 12 hits, striking out 23 while walking 8. Opponents have hit just .185 against him and he has yet to give up a HR.

There. That should sufficiently jinx him tonight.

Ya think theres any team we could sucker into selling high? I know he has his NTC, but Im sure that at this point hed waive it to go to any team willing to promote him to the bigs.

With his PH HR yesterday, Vitters is 4-4 with 2 HR's & 2 doubles in his last 4 at bats.

Lets see how he does in the 2nd half at AA. So far, he's figured out every league he's been in after initially struggling... Except now he's also improving his poor walk rate.

:good:

Shark went 5, with 2 H 4 BB 3 K. Color me cautiously intrigued.

not me. 4 BB is 5 IP still sucks. his problem has always been command, both inside and outside the strike zone. 76 pitches, 40 strikes isn't good. if he can hit his spots more often, he'll have a shot.

searle: 4.0 ip, 6 h, 6 r, 5 er, 3 bb, 8 k, 1 hr, 1 hbp. way to fill up the stat sheet big guy.

hak-ju lee is 3-3 with 2 runs scored. according to the game log, two of the hits were in the infield (1 bunt hit). use that speed buddy.

Yeah, this game wasn't great control wise. He's continues to be inconsistent with his control. In his last start, he completed 5 innings in just 59 pitches, 38 of them for strikes. He's got to perform that way more often if he wants to be a starter in the bigs.

That said, he's now allowed just 2 earned runs in 23.1 innings as a starter this season at AAA.

I've got Junior Lake solidly in my top 5 Cubs prospects at this point.

B Jackson

Vitters

Archer

Lee

Lake

J Jackson

McNutt

In fact, Lake might be ahead of Lee for me right now.

Speaking of Hak Ju Lee, hes 4-4 tonight, all singles. I just hope that Hak Ju Lee doesnt end up being Korean for Ryan Theriot.

why because they play the same position? he's way faster than theriot, has good range and a good arm. he might flop but it won't be because of the same reasons that theriot is mediocre.

that seems like an extreme overreaction to a month and a half of good play.

Perhaps...it won't stay that way unless he continues the discipline and power for the remainder of the season. I think he's got the best blend of tools of our big 3 shortstop prospects (castro, lake, lee). He's still only 20 years old and he's making huge strides in A+ ball in a notorious pitchers league.

Of course, it helps that I'm slightly disappointed in Jackson's season so far. McNutt's success hasn't been much longer lived than Lake's.

Or it could be that I haven't slept in about 48 hours and got back from South Africa on a dreadful series of flights earlier today.

I like what Junior Lake is doing right now, but he's still not in my my personal top 10 at the moment.

1 B Jackson

2 Lee

3 Archer

4 J Jackson

5 McNutt

6 Vitters

7 Carpenter

8 Barney

9 Dolis

10 Flaherty

I don't think Flaherty has the upside of Lake, but I just think he's got a much better shot at eventually making it to the bigs at least......If I was going to make a "reach" for a top 10 guy at this point in the season, my guy is Jae Hoon Ha, who is playing extremely well in Peoria at 19. Although, he seems to lack plate discipline......

That said, I figure our season end top 10's will probably include Hayden Simpson(assuming he ever pitches, where the hell is he, seriously?) and it wouldn't shock me to see BA include someone like Yeoung Jin Kim either......Reggie Golden could get there as well, if he signs.

On a side note, have I been missing the fact Logan Watkins has been playing CF? Or is this a very new development?

I assume he is focusing on the 4 singles as an indication of a complete lack of power. I don't think there is anyone doubting HJL's defense will be far superior.

...and maybe I'm in the minority but this the first year in a few that I would call Theriot mediocre...well I'd say less than mediocre this year.

Vitters sixth?

I thought I was out of my senses tonight!

:D I like our system quite a bit right now and my rankings tend to change fairly quickly. But, I hate how the Cubs have promoted him after basically having a single hot streak in Peoria and again in Daytona. I have serious questions about his defense and also about his plate discipline. He's got tons of upside and he's still extremely young too, so it's not like I don't think he can change my opinion on him.

This being said, I seriously doubt any major publication would have any lower than 4th and most would have in their top 3 most likely.

I'm banking on the fact that Vitters always seems to adjust eventually. There is no doubt that the Cubs have been extremely aggressive in promoting him. But just looking at the last two games, the talent is definitely there. I wouldn't be surprised to see him go on a tear and make his AA numbers at least look respectable by the end of the season.

Darwin Barney at 8!?!?!?

Junior Lake has a higher ceiling than Starlin Castro or Hak-Ju Lee but he's still less likely to make it to the bigs or get near his ceiling compared to a whole host of other guys despite the good month in a pitcher's league.

I need to see defensive reports on Lake before considering him for my Top 10. His errors numbers are really high and I haven't seen anything regarding why he's had so many errors. Perhaps he's comparable to Hak-Ju Lee in that he has excellent range and a good arm, but needs to iron out his defensive work...or, perhaps his errors can be attributed to him being below average defensively. I remember seeing him in Peoria and not being impressed with his defensive prowess at 2B the times I saw him, but I'd like to see scouts' opinions of him.

If he can stick at SS long-term, then yeah, I'd strongly consider putting him in my Top 10. If he's a 2B, 3B, or OF? I'm still skeptical enough of his bat to keep him out of that list for the time being.
