Jerry Dipoto never pitched for the Cubs. You're probably thinking of Frank Dipino.

Hinch sounded like a smart guy that understood what the role of a manger should be. Think Manny Acta.

Josh Byrnes, not a real smart guy.

That's exactly who I was thinking of. I remembered it after I made my post and was going to edit my post to correct it but you beat me to it.

You mean a former crappy catcher with zero managerial experience couldn't succeed with a mediocre roster and injured pitching?

All of these teams with payrolls the fraction of the Cubs fire their manager when their team is predictably bad, but the Cubs, woith their massive payroll just let Lou run them into the ground. A shame, really.

Lou's not running anything into the ground.

Grace would be on his way out if Dipino were taking over in AZ.

Ken Kendrick doesn't go on giraffe hunts in June.

The roster and pitching part I agree with, but I don't think a former player's on-filed ability has anything to do with whether he'd be a good manager or not. And as for the "zero experience" part, that may be true, but think of the five best managers in your opinion. All of them had "zero experience" at one point, too.

But as for the rest, yeah, I don't know what they expected to accomplish with that roster.

Exhibit 1: Tony LaRussa and his .199 career batting average.

What GM gives a manager who never managed a 5 year contract? With that said, I heard Hinch is a hot commodity and didn't do a bad job with the talent he had.
