Cal's offensive sets make Doug Collins's "give the ball to Michael and get the [expletive] out of the way" look like the Princeton offense. He would not bring a title to Chicago, and after you piss of Lebron by firing him, then where are you?

With LeBron having four years left on his five year deal.

That's not a problem.

Besides, LeBron, Rose, Noah and whoever's left after the sign and trade would be enough to win a title with Vinny still coaching. Cal would win a title with that core. Probably multiple.

Yeah, seems to me that the NBA is about having the superstar talent. Being able to draw up the best plays and sets doesn't appear to me to have the same effect it does in college.

Put Lebron & Rose on the same team -- that's a Conference favorite for years to come, regardless of coaching.

If there's some possible way to land Lebron, the Bulls would be fools to not pursue it.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love Calipari to the Bulls. Gets him out of the college game, and would give Sulley possibly his best material to ever work with. The meltdowns on here with each loss would be epic

There was a guy on the Scott Van Pelt show who gave an interesting thought, he said something along the lines that "it wouldn't surprise me if Lebron signs another 3 year deal. He would be just 28-29 years old when he becomes a FA again." I don't know if LBJ would go for another 3 yr deal, but what if.........

That said, it's not happening. (Lebron or Calipari)

Yeah, I think coaching in the NBA is all about managing egos, knowing how to get the most out of your players, and being likable. I mean does anyone regard Phil Jackson as a great X and O's coach? Everyone knows Tex was the mind behind the triangle offense, while Phil was handing out random books on road trips to reach his players. But Phil is the most successful coach in the game today because he was able to take 3 different superstar laden teams to championships (MJ/Pip, Shaq/Kobe, Kobe/Gasol). I mean I am trivializing it a bit because there are tons of coaches that implement styles and schemes that make a team better (D'Antoni, Skiles, Jeff Van Gundy, etc). But on a superstar laden team that's much less important.

True. But there'd only be about 15 per year for you to enjoy.

Eh, with the CBA likely being revised to be less favorable to the players after next season (i think), I doubt that would be an option. I've heard people suggest that in the past and shot down for that reason. Some of the ideas being thrown around include 4 year contracts being the max length and only 2 years being guaranteed. Meaning he'd get more guaranteed money taking the full 7 year max deal now with the Cavs than signing for 3 years and then signing a new "max deal" that only guarantees him 2 more years. This scenario is also being used to explain why many players might resign with their current teams or demand sign and trades, because this might be their last huge payday of their careers.

So why the freaking out over Vinny?

Not sure if you are responding to me but who is freaking out over Vinny?

Every single Bulls fan for the better part of the last 2 seasons.

Because he sucked and didn't have a team good enough or stars experienced enough to overcome his suckiness?

Phil Jackson is a great X's and O's coach. I agree with what you're saying about managing egos and maximizing potential but you look at a guy like Popovich or Jackson and the way they make adjustments and manage the flow of the game is very important. Vinny was overwhelmed in that regard. Plus his end of game TO/foul/clock management was just terrible.

I'm saying if the coach doesn't matter, and all that matters is the skill of the players, then don't hate Vinny for the Bulls having [expletive] players

The coach matters a lot. The problem is that most of them are retreads and pretty interchangeable with the rest of the mediocre coaches in the league.

If you've got one of the few difference makers on the bench then you've got a big advantage. Also it helps if you've got a consistent philosophy with the front office and a coach that understands personnel and match ups. That's where Popovich and Jackson are so good.

This is actually pretty far from the truth. Cal runs a fairly complex dribble drive motion offense.

I think experience is the key on both sides here. If you have stars who are experienced then they can overcome a bad/inexperienced coach. I don't have anything against VDN; this was just a matter of terrible timing to have this type of team and a young, first time NBA head coach. Too many times we saw horrible, horrible plays, especially at the end of close games, that were clearly coming from VDN and the key players either weren't good enough or not experienced enough to overcome that. That's not all on VDN, but he's a huge part of stuff like that and has to go.

Everyone who thinks coaching doesn't matter, especially on a team with a young gem and no discernable go-to offensive player, is an idiot. Lucky for Vinny, Ben Gordon carried some of the 4th quarter load last season and Derrick turned into a respectable number one star on a playoff team this season. Without those developments, he would have been exposed as a total clown (as opposed to what happened, him being exposed only to people who understand NBA basketball). If you watched Scott Skiles designing set plays and saw his defense for those seasons with the Bulls and then watched Vinny and came to the conclusion that Vinny isn't a joke, you're bad at watching basketball and should probably stop. Time to hit the old dusty trail as an NBA observer.

Coaching matters. It matters less when you have a superstar, but it certainly matters.

I absolutely agree with this. Comcast said Eric Musselman was one of the frontrunners for the job. I mean really??? Cheeks and Johnson were the only names mentioned that would interest me if I were a Bulls fan(and I may be overrating Cheeks because I was impressed with how cleaned up the Blazers' act.)

No, he's right. Calipari is pretty much a strategical nitwit.

Nick's not rational about Calipari.
