Gregg Zaun can't throw

Pat and Ron were talking about that and they said if the pitcher throws the ball and it hits the dirt, the ump throws it away. However if the catcher throws it and it hits the ground, the ump practically never checks the ball.

If a pitcher throws it in there at 80+ mph, hitting the dirt + catcher's equipment could make a significant scrape on the ball, but when a catcher like Zaun is lobbing 30 MPH backyard tosses that barely get back there, I don't think it has much of an effect.
