This leaves Daytona with just 23 players, 12 pitchers (7 relievers plus Cates/Wells/Burke/Francescon/Kirk), and 11 hitters. There will likely be a couple more bodies heading to Daytona soon.

I doubt it. You want the pitchers to learn how to pitch with any catcher and not just have an A-ball personal catcher.

thats possible I suppose. And i guess i didnt think of the DH. Often times at EXST, the extra catchers they have DH.

 

One reason there are so many catchers in extended is because there are so many more pitchers there (two minor league teams worth plus all the rehabbers).
