No way we can get him without letting go of Castro and Colvin.

They can ask, but they will get a no on Castro. But the Cubs, IMO, still have enough to land AGon without including Castro.

Ah. Why in the world do you think that, again?

I would doubt the Cubs would want to include Castro. He seems like a prospect who is off limits for us.

Also we most likely have enough to get him without Castro but we would probably have to give up just about everyone else (Cashner, Jackson x2, Vitters)

As much as I would love to have Gonzalez, the price will be way too high because of all the competition for his services. I'm sure DLee will re-sign, but it seems that I've seen Pena's name mentioned in rumor sites.

Because Kevin Towers isn't the GM anymore. Agone will be price, just not as bad as what some think. Vitters/Brett Jackson/ and two B prospects is more then enough to land AGone, and definately more then what they got for Jake Peavy.

and definately more then what they got for Jake Peavy.

peavy had a NTC that killed Towers in that situation, not to mention health concerns and a big contract. i mean, towers had what... like 2 or 3 teams that he could trade peavy to?

gonzalez is a completely different situation.

How many teams have the resources to keep Gonzalez and an opening for him to play? I'd say less than 10 and closer to 5. Everyone could use a starting pitcher, not everyone needs a 1B.

The difference is what 5 teams are likely to pursue AGon. Almost all, if not all the top payroll teams in the league will go after AGon and most likely only top payroll teams will go after him because of the contract he will likely demand.

Peavy was injury prone and while is contract is big it was still small enough middle of the road teams wanted him. The injuries scared off most of the big payroll teams, plus they have great rotations already, so you were left with somewhat desperate middle of the road teams willing to take the risk.

What big market teams are in need of a 1B? Obviously there's a couple, but it's not about to be some sort of unholy bidding war.

but the important thing is that there WILL be a bidding war. there wasn't really a bidding war for peavy. the braves had a deal worked out but the refusal to let Peavy keep his NTC broke it up. the cubs seemingly would have gotten him if not for the ownership situation. then when the sox got him, there weren't really any rumors at all of anybody competing with them.

also, gonzalez will be a much more attractive player at this deadline than peavy was when he was traded. peavy had lots of question marks around him.

why does it have to be a big market team that trades for him? we've seen lots of blockbuster trades with stud players going to teams that didn't extend them.

I'm not really remembering many, which trades are you talking about?

It's almost too early to be talking about this really. You're talking mid season 2011 most likely here. In all likelihood, Castro(who I don't see the Cubs dealing anyway) will be our starting SS by that point. Hell, he may have a full year under his belt by then actually. Prospects statuses change pretty dramatically over that period of time too. Will Vitters be tearing the cover off of AA pitching? Or will he be looking like a guy that struggles to post a .300 OBP in the majors by that time? Will Brett Jackson be K'ing every other at bat in AA or will he be looking like a future Jim Edmonds at that time? How have Jay Jackson and Andrew Cashner looked in the majors by that time, assuming they've gotten there? Has Hak-ju Lee vaulted into the top 50 of most prospect lists over the 2010 season?

Bottom line for me is this: It's going to take an extremely good package to get Gonzalez. My guess is a top 25 guy, maybe 2 top 100ish guys, and possibly a low ceiling guy who almost definitely reaches the majors(like a Barney). Will our system have that to offer when the time comes? My guess is yes, it will. Our system is moving up rapidly right now and should continue to do so, since the majority of our top guys are still in the lower levels for now. The real question though is whether or not we'll match San Diego's needs when the time comes. Sometimes, there just aren't good fits between clubs. But, either way, I'm sure he's on our radar already. I guess we'll find out for sure though, when we decide what to do with D-Lee.......

now that theriot is into his arbitration years, he doesn't really have much value on the trade market. he's a pretty good OBP/AVG guy who is a mediocre fielder and is almost 30 years old. the padres will want a guy who will give them really good production at a cheap price, not decent production at $5m a year.

Hope that Theriot has a good to very good year and then include him in the package. Does SD need a SS?

They might need a shortstop, but it won't be Theriot.

Wont happen.

Cubs wouldn't be willing to trade for him until after the season, and the Padres are very likely to unload him around the deadline. And whichever team trades for him will probably extend him too.

Fielder on the other hand, he's got a shot at ending up a Cub at some point.
