I missed this if it was posted elsewhere, but the Cubs have made their first roster cuts. P Mitch Atkins has been optioned to Iowa, P David Patton has been optioned to Tennessee, and IFs Josh Vitters and Matt Camp, Cs Steve Clevenger and Blake Lalli, OF Brett Jackson, and Ps Jeff Kennard and Vince Perkins have been assigned to minor league camp.

I'm a little surprised about Clevenger, not because I thought he'd make the team but they usually keep extra catchers around longer due to all the SS games.

Well, they also need catchers in the minor league camps.

Frequently they bring players in from minor league camp for split squad games anyway, so they could still bring him in for that purpose.

Interesting. The article says 18 pitchers are left. The active roster though only has 17. Two of those are Guzman and Lilly who aren't opening the season on the active roster. That only leaves 3 pitchers who need to be cut/sent down. One of those will be Mateo. Will they keep Parisi even with a mediocre spring? And is Gray very likely to be ready for the start of the season?

Unless there is a supposed 18th pitcher that isn't on the roster, it looks like there is a pretty good idea of how the pitching staff will shake out. Now it's pretty much just who will be in the rotation and who will be in the bullpen.

James Russell is still in camp but isn't on the roster. He's competing for the last bullpen spot, but it looks like the organization is leading toward Berg.

With two weeks remaining, the Cubs have a few spots to finalize. Piniella said there are four relievers competing for one spot in the bullpen, and that group includes John Gaub, James Russell, Marcus Mateo and Mike Parisi. When asked about Berg, Piniella said: "Berg is in. Berg has done a nice job."
