Mets Sign Kiko Calero

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [March 4 at 2:53pm CST]

The Mets signed Kiko Calero to a minor league deal worth up to $1.5MM. He earns $850K if he makes the team, with another $650K available in incentives. There is no opt-out if the Mets send him to the minors.

Sorry if this is being discussed elsewhere, but come one now. I wouldnt be on board for giving Calero a multi year deal, but Id have been all for giving him a 1.5 mil guaranteed major league deal, especially with our cluster [expletive] bullpen.

unless teams have a bad medical report on him...I just don't get it.

Even if there is a bad medical report, unless its Prior or Mulderesque, I cant understand not taking the gamble at that price, especially when our pen is not in great shape as it is. If Guzman cant make it back any time soon, I really dont like the looks of it.

He's a 35 year old who has barely pitched in the majors, I'm guessing the reason nobody is interested is because he's not that good.

He's been pretty good when healthy. Good strikeout rate, doesn't give up a lot of hits, keeps the ball in the ballpark. The big issue the past few years has been health.

Career 132 ERA+ over 302 MLB innings since 2003. And his numbers are actually suffering from a poor 2007 because he was pitching hurt. That was the only full season of his career his ERA+ was below 130.

If an arm is in bad enough shape to keep the Cubs away then it must be basically erradictaed at this point because they love themselves some broken pitchers.
