Reed Johnson-OF-Cubs Jan. 31 - 3:50 pm et

FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal reports that the Dodgers are making a "hard run" at free agent outfielder Reed Johnson.

Rosenthal adds that a "deal may be close or already done," so talks have clearly reached a serious stage. Johnson, 33, was limited to 65 games last season because of a fractured foot. He hit .313/.378/.412 with four homers and 22 RBI during the 165 at-bats he was healthy and will serve as a utility outfielder next year in Los Angeles if (or when) a deal is struck.

I hope it works out for him.

now people can finally stop wanting reed johnson to play against rhp

I dont think anyone ever really saw Reed as anything more than a platoon guy vs. lefties or a late inning defensive sub.

there may not have been a lot on this board, there were a ton of stupid cubs fans wanting him to play against righties at several times during his cubs career.

Reed Johnson had a lot of support from people I know to become an everyday player.

During some of Kosuke's slumps, I recall some on the board wanting Reed to start everyday.

and when soriano was hurt in 08, or sucking in 09, or right before edmonds signed in 08, or when bradley wasn't getting enough RBIs for cubs fans in 09, etc.

the biggest culprit was dave kaplan. what a goon

In their defense, Im not a Kosuke basher, but when he is in one of his slumps, there arent a lot of guys who I wouldnt rather have come to the plate.

As for a lot of Cubs fans supporting Reed as an everyday player, in his short time as a Cub Reed did estblish himself as a "fan favorite", and in those cases, your average fan will look past the fact that hes inept vs. righties. Look at Ryan Theriot. While Im not a Theriot basher or a Theriot lover, I know a lot of people on this board are Theriot bashers, but as far as your average fan goes, hes a fav as well, and many people see him as a Cub for life.

but even at his worst, kosuke was a better option vs RHP than johnson was. (i liked reed johnson btw)

I dont know, especially in the 2nd half of '08 when he seemed to spin all the way back to the dugout after every at bat, I would have rather had Ted Lilly, Sean Marshall, or dare I say...Aaron Miles(yes, Im aware he wanst on the team) at the plate instead of him.

Reed's the most talented player they've brought in this offseason, though that says more about the Dodgers than it does about Reed.

Sometimes it OK to apply the if it aint broke, dont fix it rule. If only Jim Hendry had applied said rule last year.

Damn, Reed signed for 800k? With another 250k potential in performance bonuses. At those numbers, you kind of have to wonder if it would have been worth it to try to keep him as well, for the 5th OFer spot.
