Big fan of this signing, time for some competition for Big HoffP. Tracy has murdered the Cubs in his career (1.057 OPS in 84 AB's, highest vs any NL team) and hit well at Wrigley in limited AB's.

I wouldn't put too much stock in him hitting well at Wrigley historically. Much like Jeff Blauser, that was against Cub pitchers.

the cubs pitching staff has been good.

Man, back when Tracy was 26 or so, who'd have guessed he'd be a scrub minor-league contract guy at this point?

I don't think Hoffpauir is relevant, since Hoffpauir was no better than 26th man even before Tracy. I'm not sure I see where Tracy fits.

I think he's basically a true minor league free agent: make the team (maybe) in case of an injury, but in absence of an injury to an intended roster guy, go to the minors and try to be ready when an injury creates an opening.

I really think best bet is he starts in minors and waits until Ramirez gets hurt. There isnt' a good reason for him to make the team out of spring training unless there's an injury.

Yeah, I mean I wasn't really putting much stock into that, just interesting info.

Like the fact he was really good in a PH role last year as well.

Even if Tracy does make the team out of ST, his track record would lead me to believe that theres little chance that he aviods significant DL time. However, could this aquisition make Fontenot trade bait? would we be able to land a solid middle reliever for him? Assumig Tracy makes the team, and we want to keep Fuld, Font could be expendable. That way we start the season with Baker and Theriot at 2B and SS, and Andres Blanco a more than capable backup for either, defensively anyway. And if the need arrises for another MI, we could always call up Bobby Scales, who is more than likely to accept a minor league assignment after hes cut at the end of spring training. We also have Darwin Barney as a plan C, and of course there are the numorous free agent veterans always floating around early in the season.
