Braves Designate Ryan Church For Assignment

The Braves designated outfielder Ryan Church for assignment, tweets Bill Shanks. The move was done to make room for Rafael Soriano, who accepted arbitration last night. Church had been considered a non-tender candidate anyway after hitting .273/.338/.384 in 399 plate appearances for the Braves and Mets in 2009. He earned $2.8MM in '09 and would've been due a raise through arbitration.

 

This guy wa shaping up to be a very good player before his concussion. I dont know much about his defense, but he could be a very good buy low candidate, certainly better than Marlon Byrd or Scott Podsednik.

Yeah he'd be a solid bench bat and he shouldn't demand much as he probably wants to reestablish his value.

I dont know about all that. I could see him accepting a platoon or 4th outfielder role, but Id imagine a lot of teams out there would offer him a big league deal.

Hendry has been a fan of Church in the past, so I can see him having some interest. The problem is with Fukudome needing a platoon partner who hits LH pitching well. Church isn't a really good fit as the 4th outfielder. Because he struggles alot against LH pitching himself. If things end up going really bad this offseason, which means the don't Cubs don't save much money on Bradley and take a long time to trade him. I could see them having to bring in someone like Church or Ankiel to be the regular CF or RF against RH pitching next season. So Church as a 4th outfielder probably is unlikely, but Church as a regular is possible.

Here's a good example of a player that I think most of us can agree would be a nice addition, depending on price. Now watch Hendry ignore this guy in favor of another "Miles" type player/deal.

I've always liked Church so I wouldn't mind having him added to the team at all.
