top 50 FA list

not my favorite site but looks to be a pretty good ranking of available FA's

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/11/2010-top-50-free-agents.html

I would like the Cubs to hang back this year and make a few late signings once the prices come down

a few that I would like to see in Cubbie blue

Kiko Calero - has been a solid reliever in the AL when healthy - should come cheap

Brad Penny - use part of the $$$ Harden would have cost on him

I like Felipe Lopez and think he would be a good fit if the price is right

No. If we sign Calero it's because Jim gave him a three year, $15 million deal with a player option for a fourth year.

This is the second place that has predicted us to sign Billy Wagner. I don't know how I feel about that. If he is still throwing hard, and could be picked up relatively cheap then it wouldn't be a bad signing.

I would take a flier on Billy Wagner in a heartbeat if he came at a reasonable cost. But knowing him and his history (as well as Hendry's penchant for bad reliever contracts) the cost won't be too reasonable I would presume.

Yea I can see it now. Wagner tells Hendry "Im looking for a 1 year deal, Im definitely retiring at the end of the year." Hendry responds with, "Thats ok Billy, we will give you a 3 year guaranteed deal, no trade and all, how does that sound to you Billy?"

Adrian Beltre - Twins. The Twins made a large upgrade at shortstop by acquiring J.J. Hardy. Beltre would give them fantastic left-side infield defense and another possible 20 home run bat. The Twins had interest in trading for Beltre a year ago, though the Scott Boras client added them to his no-trade clause.

So he refused a trade to the Twins but now he'll sign there as a FA? That doesn't make any sense.

If every player they have linked to the Mets signed, there payroll would probably be ~ $300 million

Actually, it does make a little bit of sense. While under contract, he had the ability to decide what teams he was willing to be traded to. As a player who is no longer under contract, his list of potential suitors should not be limited at all, since he could find himself out of work entirely. Beggars can't be choosers.

I don't see how. He turns down a chance to play for a contender who would either non tender him or try to extend him. Either way he would have been better off accepting the trade and working out an extension.
