Depending on the exact contract details I might've very well applauded signing one of those, despite the loss of draft pick.

Teams have to offer those guys arbitration in order to even get the picks, correct? Who in their right mind would offer Wagner arbitration? If they aren't offered arbitration (which is extemely likely for some guys in this DEPRESSED market), then you don't give up anything to sign them.

Yes and no.

For players signed after the December 1st deadline to offer arbitration, teams only get picks if they offered arbitration.

For players signed before that deadline, it's automatically assumed that the team would have offered arbitration, and they get those draft picks. We've seen that happen a few times. For instance, when Jason Kendall left the Cubs for the Brewers, they acted on it before the deadline and the Cubs got a draft pick out of it.

You are correct. However, those relievers won't be getting picked up prior to the arbitration date unless someone is even more stupid than Hendry. Teams aren't going to want to give up draft picks for relief pitchers.

if you want to nitpick, it's 35.7% (10/28).

ESPN has it at 10/29

Do we really want to bet $7.5 million dollars that 2008 was the norm when it's sandwiched between worse seasons?

If he does what he did in 09 with the Cubs I'll be totally fine with him. I never said that I would have paid him 7.5m for two years and I think Hendry overpaid. But I would have been fine with the deal if we signed him 2y at say 5.7m-6m(he gets that on open market). Because like I said the guy pitched well the last two years and I'm fine with him pitching in the 7th or 8th inning(depending on Guzman health and the match up). With any reliever there's always a chance he might not pitch well. But as long as teams keep only hitting 215-230 off him he should be just fine. There was very few Cubs fans complaining about his performance in August and September last year. So if he pitches anywere close to that people will be ok with this deal even though the Cubs did overpay him.

People weren't complaining in Aug and Sept because nobody was watching.....

Hendry overpaid AGAIN, and its the same thing every offseason. Overpay, overpay, outbid himself, and overpay some more.

I like this trade.

Much better than throwing money at both Grabow and Heilman in 2010

Let's just hope the Cubs identified the right prospects.

Wait.....

The Cubs were still playing in Aug and Sept? The season was over in June. Hmmm. That's good to know.

Thats the reason that us on a message board wanna think. But I personally don't believe MLB GM's don't understand what us common fans can.

I think you overestimate some MLB GM's.
