MLBTR has learned that the Cubs and White Sox have expressed interest in free agenty lefty Aroldis Chapman. The Cardinals have been more aggressive than those clubs, and plan to meet with Chapman next week. The Yankees and Red Sox, of course, have also been among the aggressive suitors.

Way too expensive for us I'd imagine.

Isn't there an age discrepancy with Chapman. I heard some people say he is 21/22 and others claim he is closer to 26/27 years old? Doesn't matter, I doubt the Cubs will pony up what it will take to get him, and quite frankly I see Jose Contreras all over him, ie comes with hype but failed miserably.

If we're going to be winning World Series' then we need to be getting some serious pitching caliber, sign him tommy.

Chapman throws hard and he's a lefty, so that's going to get him a big contract.

But he's not really a great pitcher at this time. All the real scouting I've read on him is that his secondary pitches are not outstanding and he lacks pinpoint command. I really don't think he's going to be a good gamble at the contract he'll get.

There are some concerns about his age, but the rumors about him being 26 don't seem to have much basis beyond pure speculation.

It's clear Chapman will need time in the minors if he is going to develop in a meaningful way. From what I've read, he needs to clean up his mechanics and, as Tim mentioned, he's a bit raw in terms of his stuff and command. Still, if he pans out, he could be a fantastic pitcher.

I would much rather spend the amount of money it likely will take to sign him on a bunch of other high ceiling prospects personally. If Ricketts truly wants to revamp our system(which is already making tremendous strides) spending bigtime money on one guy doesn't make as much sense as spreading it out for a bunch of players instead.

Plus, with our payroll situation right now, spending a bunch on a very risky player, isn't a very good allocation of funds as it is. Any money spent this offseason should go towards someone who we know what we are getting from them.

most people agree that chapman will be spending at least a year in the minors; to refine his stuff. So he is definitely raw.

IMO; i think he is going to make someone a heck of a closer one day but not much of a starter.

No age discrepancy. Unlike other defectors, he has his passport.

The Cubs won't drop the coin that is needed to sign him. The White Sox won't; I'll be shocked if the Cardinals do.
