The Cubs off-season flirtations for some talented player often lead to passionate kissing and even sometimes heavy petting, but they ultimately never seem to finish the job.

Who will this year's tease be?

Change in ownership + paying Bradley to play somewhere else = No marquee player on the radar this winter

I voted BJ Upton because he'll cost more in prospects than money. I doubt the rumors abound about the Cubs being interested in big-money guys this offseason.

is there really trade speculation surrounding david wright and king felix?

yes on felix, no on wright.

Hendry & Piniella probably don't see SS as a big need so that eliminates Reyes. Isn't Wagner a FA? They could just sign him so no drama there- I don't see them signing him.

I'll go with Halladay. The Cubs could use a true ace and the Jays like Wells. I could see people thinking (in vain) that the Cubs could land Halladay.

Cubs get

Vernon Wells

Roy Halladay

Jays get

Randy Wells

Milton Bradley

Sean Marshall

Jay Jackson

Tyler Colvin

Wellington Castillo

I posted this elsewhere, but I think it needs pointed out again here.

We have the following players under contract for the 2010 season (Signing bonuses prorated):

Alfonso Soriano - $19,000,000

Carlos Zambrano - $18,875,000

Aramis Ramirez - $16,750,000

Kosuke Fukudome - $14,000,000

Ryan Demptster - $13,500,000

Derrek Lee - $13,000,000

Ted Lilly - $13,000,000

Milton Bradley - $10,333,333

Aaron Miles - $2,700,000

Jeff Samardzija - $2,000,000

Total - $123,158,333

We are also on the hook for Luis Vizcaino's $500,000 buyout for 2010.

Roy Halladay's contract pays $15,750,000 next season. Vernon Wells' salary is "only" $12,500,000... but his contract stipulates his signing bonus was split into 3 $8,500,000 chunks, one of which is due this March.

Even if we can get the Jays to pick up all of Bradly's contract, we cant add $26,416,667 to next years payroll... we can barely afford to pay the arbitration eligible players.

not to mention that the jays would be stupid to take that package even if we could afford the return

The Jays would be brilliant to get a package like that if they could get out of Wells' contract in the process.

They could use the money freed up to sign Lackey and Bay (canadian, iirc), then invest a bunch more in international and overslot drafting. They'd be in much better shape as a result.
