1-2-3 first. If they can piece any kind of offense together they should contend for a long time if this kid is their #3.

would have been even better if they didn't trade alderson for sanchez

he has a weird delilvery with long arm motion. i don't know if i like it.

Kyle Boddy from DrivelineMechanics agrees:

As a result of striding far too closed, Madison Bumgarner severely pulls his pitching arm across his body, which strains the pectoralis minor in addition to other anterior shoulder muscles. He also features severe arm recoil due in no small part to his poor followthrough.

Bumgarner's a great talent, but I feel that his steadily dropping velocity is not a fluke or necessarily a sign of a young pitcher reaching his limits - it could be due to steadily accumulating shoulder damage.

i'm kinda of annoyed that BA didn't mention anything about his delivery in the prospect handbook. that's the first thing i noticed when i saw him pitching; his delivery is unorthodox and his arm motion is really long. even if you don't agree that it makes him an injury risk, it at least bears mentioning in a long write-up on him.

He really doesn't go too badly across the body. The problem is, according to Giants fans, his velocity. They see him as Jesse Foppart part 2. Guy lauded for a mid 90's fastball who, when called up, is only throwing high 80's consistently while touching 91 a few times - which is as high as any of his fastballs registered. I really hope that he's just tired with a bit of dead arm nearing the end of his second pro season. Any rotation with guys like Lincecum, Cain, and who Bumgarner is supposed to be is very hard not to root for. Add in Buster Posey and Pablo Sandoval, and you have the base players to build around for a long time.

Agreed, I'm excited to see how the Giants pan out in the future. They're like the Orioles of the National League

my concern is that his foot doesn't land anywhere close to in line with home plate. he doesn't get enough drive toward home plate and you can see his arm draw way back behind his body, then really whip against his right side on the follow through. to me, he's doing too much of his throwing purely on arm strength and arm velocity, and isn't getting enough help from his lower half.

He's got an old time delivery and it looks to me that it is actually better for his shoulder. Not sure about the elbow though.
