Caridad placed on 40man, called up, Stevens to Iowa

The Chicago Cubs today selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Esmailin Caridad from Triple-A Iowa. To make room for Caridad on the roster, the Cubs optioned right-handed pitcher Jeff Stevens to Triple-A.

Caridad, who will wear uniform number 33, joins the first major league roster of his career and is available for tonight’s game in Colorado.

The 25-year-old Caridad is 5-10 with a 4.15 ERA (58 ER/125.2 IP) in 23 starts with Iowa this season, including a 1-1 record with a 2.74 ERA (7 ER/23.0 IP) in his last four starts. He was a non-roster invitee to Cubs spring training in 2009, posting no record and a 0.00 ERA (6.0 IP) in six Cactus League relief appearances.

It looks like they wanted a new long reliever with Samardzija moving into the rotation. IMO, they sent Stevens down because they wanted a fresh arm, and they wanted a long man so that made their decision to call up a starter at Iowa instead of a reliever there. Caridad was the freshest (as he was supposed to pitch tonight) so he was the one called up.

It's a bit interesting to see him be put on the 40 man roster at this point of the season. I wonder if that means that they think he has a future with the club and would have been put on next year regardless, or if they just think that he's a random pitcher who they don't really care about and if they have to trade him for little or deroster him after the season that they aren't really concerned about it.

Maybe a little bit of both. The Cubs have been doing this sort of thing the last few years with Hart, Leicester and other guys with so-so Iowa stats.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Stevens being optioned to Iowa doesn't clear a spot on the 40 man right? He would need to be outrighted to the minors for that to happen.

So did we just have an extra spot on the 40 man?

i believed we had two open spots, but i could be wrong.

We had 3, now we have 2.
