This is pretty standard settlement spin. If you just settle, you look guilty. The cabbie said a lot of damning, specific things about Patrick. Now he starts to obfuscate and back peddle. Soon, he will have a Ferrari and a condo in South Beach and Patrick will be scoring goals.

I'm not saying I know what happened, I'm just saying this behavior is predictable.

This is one of the most bizarre stories I've ever seen. My initial thoughts were that I wasn't surprised that Kane would be such a douche. You can tell very easily why Toews was tagged as the captain and Kane was the marketing guys dream. But the more I'm reading the more sympathetic Kane appears in the story, which I guess is why publicists get paid. The taxi drivers attorney sounds like a moron. The drivers sounds like a scumbag, and there may not be a bigger group of shady characters than small town cabbies. In big fleets like NYC, you've got characters, but they don't get away with much considering how tightly the city monitors them. In smaller towns you are probably running a 75% chance of getting in a car with a drunk driver, sexual abuser and felon.

I can't figure out why the guy's attorney would come out and say things have been overblown. That seemed really counterproductive to me, from the cabbie's standpoint. I mean, even if the cabbie did overblow things, why go on the air and broadcast that to the world -- especially at that point?

The only thing I could think of is to avoid some kind of defamation suit, saying that the story was overblown by the media.

It's part of the groundwork for a settlement.

Right.

The thing I don't get about this, and I've not done criminal work so maybe I'm just ignorant, but the attorney that represents Kane used to represent the cabbie. That's not an issue in and of itself. But the attorney is out there talking about the cabbie's prior legal problems.

I don't think it's an obvious ethics violation, but it sure stinks.

Blackhawks star Patrick Kane pleaded guilty this morning to disorderly conduct in a case involving an assault on a Buffalo cabdriver earlier this month, said a prosecutor for the Erie County district attorney's office.

Disorderly conduct is considered a noncriminal violation, said Assistant District Atty. Paul Bonanno. Kane had faced misdemeanor assault, theft and harassment charges and could have been sentenced to up to 15 days in jail on those charges.

In the plea deal, Kane agreed to be freed on conditional discharge and also must issue a written apology to cab driver Jan Radecki, Bonanno said.

The conditional discharge sentence means that to avoid any penalty, Kane must abide by the law wherever he lives and the other conditions set by the court for the next year.

The 20-year-old Blackhawk's cousin, James Kane, 21, also pleaded guilty to the same violation.

The Blackhawks and NHL stayed quiet on this while it was active. Now that he's plead guilty to what appears to be a very meaningless charge what will the response be? Any discipline coming from the Hawks?

I doubt very seriously the league will do anything. Q might make him skate some extra laps.

Perhaps this will make him more mature, but I don't really care unless it makes him more interested in being a two-way player and laying off on the lazy stick penalties.

I'm getting geared up for bitching about hockey already! Can't wait for the season, btw.

Maybe the Hawks secretly wanted this. Kane's a criminal now, he's got more street cred.
