Cubs activate Soto..Hoffpauir to Iowa

From Bruce's blog:

(Just a few minutes ago, at about 5:50 Chicago time, the Cubs announced they've activated Soto and sent infielder-outfielder Micah Hoffpauir to Class AAA Iowa. No doubt the Cubs want to keep Sam Fuld as a defensive replacement in the big yard at Coors Field.)

Good move IMO. Bring Hoffpauir back up a couple days before September 1st to make sure he's eligible for the playoff roster and hopefully he's hitting by then.

Why would the Cubs need to do that? Isn't Hoffapauir already eligible since he was on the team before Sept 1st?

Nope, they have to be on the 25 man roster at midnight the last day of August (or the major league DL) to be eligible. The only other way people can make it on the roster is as part of an exemption for a DL'd player (the Cubs could sneak somebody else onto the playoff roster that doesn't come back up until September as a replacement for the loss of Chad Fox).

Isn't that how K-Rod got onto the Angels playoff team back in '02 despite only being a September call-up?

Yes. For the Cubs, Kevin Hart made the postseason roster that way a couple of years ago, and I believe a player or two made it the same way last year.

Wouldnt a phantom injury have been better? We just burned an option on him when we could have just stashed him on the DL for a few weeks.

I wrote a couple days ago that I thought the Cubs would DL him to save his option, but the player has to agree to go on the DL. Either he didn't agree to it, or more likely, the Cubs decided he could use the at bats in AAA to get him ready for the stretch run. He has been really flat recently, and I think the Cubs want him on their post-season roster.

They could have placed him on the DL and still sent him to Iowa, calling it a rehabilitation assignment. Maybe they wanted the flexibility of being able to bring him back sooner if somebody else got injured.

It's very tacky to place a player who isn't hurt on the DL. How long do you have to stay in the minors before you can be brought back up?

It might be tacky, but all of the teams do it. Unfortunately many teams do it better than the Cubs.

Generally 10 days. However, if another player is placed on the DL a player can be brought back up in less than 10 days. A couple of times this year players were called up literally the very next day after being sent down (this happened with Scales and, if I recall, Stevens).
