That's no guarentee of success.

It's usually a pretty good indicator of it though. Barring a ton of injuries.

Here's the top 3 payrolls from last year and where they finished in their division.

Yankees - 3rd place

Tigers - LAST PLACE

Mets - 2nd place

And the Yankees and Tigers had a ton of injuries.

Regardless, the point is money is not always a great indicator of how well you'll do. In recent times, yes, the cubs have had a very high payroll. But they've won back to back division titles - last year winning 97 freaking games. So what's your problem? Hendry has been given a ton of money and had lots of recent success. Could he have spent it better? Always. But this bottom-5 crap is ridiculous.

Our payroll the past few years has dwarfed our competition, the NL Central.

And again, the season is not play only or mostly against the thrifty teams in the NL Central or thrifty teams in general. Just beacause a team spends 110 million doesn't make them a lock to beat up on teams spending in, say, the 70-90 million range.

Ok agree to disagree. But, still I don't want to keep hendry around because I'm fearful the next guy could be worse. The next guy could be Theo Epstein.

How many teams do we play every year that spend as much as us? 2 maybe 3?

White Sox, Mets, Phillies, Dodgers, and Astros are all pretty close this year. Trade deadline moves kind mucked salaries up, so it's hard to tell based on info that's out there.

how the heck are the Astros spending that much?

CLee, Tejada, Roy, Lance.

The guys everyone thought would be on the block last year, but the Stros stuck with 'em.

They have. And I think Lou's done a really good job keeping them afloat, but maybe that's more how bad the rest of the division was.

I've expressly said that I don't want to keep Hendry only for that reason either. I just hope nobody is really thinking getting a Theo Epstein-type as GM is really all that likely. I would love it if that happened...sadly it seems like the thing that happens all too rarely across baseball.

Probably not, but there's a better-than-average chance we get someone better than Hendry.

I don't believe that. I've seen Cub teams tank, and when that happens they just lose. Almost regardless of competition. I know the division isn't that strong, but I still think the Cubs have done a good job not letting themselves just sink under the weight of the challenges they've faced this season.
