Cliff Lee to Phillies done deal

Phillies' Pursuit Of Lee Heats Up

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 29 at 10:34am CST]

ESPN.com's Jayson Stark notes that three Indians scouts were in Lehigh Valley to watch the Phillies' Triple A team this morning. As we noted earlier, Carlos Carrasco was scratched from today's start and Stark says it was without explanation. Stark hears from a source close to the Indians who denies that the team is close to making a major move.

The Phillies and Indians have been involved in discussions, but haven't yet exchanged medical reports on players. One possible package would send Carrasco, a top position player, Jason Knapp and Trevor May to the Indians for Lee. The Phils tell other teams they believe they can deal for Lee without giving up Kyle Drabek or Dominic Brown.

Putting 2 and 2 together, it sounds like Lee could be a Phillie beofre long at all. Does this drive up Halladays price with the next best thing off the market, or does it drive it down with the top suiter moving on?

I don't think it affects the Halladay situation. Halladay's price is already very high...I don't think it goes up from there. Riccardi doesn't seem to be desperate to trade him..but rather, will either get the high price he's seeking, or won't trade him at all.

I'm really hoping the Jays hold on to Halladay until the offseason. That way the Cubs may be able to get involved, although I don't think we have the organizational firepower to win a bid like that.

Wed have to pretty much clearout the farm. Wed be talking Vitters, Jay Jackson, Cashner, and Carpenter and then some.

12:03pm: Gordon Edes and Tim Brown of Yahoo report that the Phillies appear to be "on the verge" of acquiring Cliff Lee from the Indians for Carrasco, Knapp and at least two of Donald, Marson and Michael Taylor.

This seems like a really good deal for the Indians. Four of the Phillies' top 10 prospects is impressive. Of course, the Phillies will have Lee this year and next at a bargain price ($5.75 prorated this year and $8 million next year).

Phillies Agree To Trade For Lee, Francisco

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 29 at 12:42pm CST]

12:42pm: Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi report that the sides have agreed to a deal that sends Cliff Lee and Ben Francisco to Philly for Jason Knapp, Carlos Carrasco, Jason Donald and Lou Marson. The teams still have to examine medical records for the deal to go through.

Indians pretty much want to deal anyone not named Grady Sizemore. If only they had a 2B that could hit who hadnt already been traded to the Cardinals for a package we could have matched.

If I had to guess, I'd say Sizemore, Shin-Soo Choo and Asdrubal Cabrera are the position players they have no interest in trading.

I'm still surprised they traded Garko so easily, though.

I like this deal a lot for the Indians.

Beat me to it. Happ and Drabek might not be in the deal, but the Indians are still getting a lot of talent.

Carlos Carrasco #2 prospect

Lou Marson #3 prospect

Jason Donald #4 prospect

Jason Knapp #10 prospect

Pretty good haul for the Tribe.

As I said, I like this a lot for Cleveland, but it's good for Philadelphia short term as well. They get a very good starter who is cheap this year and next.

that's not a very accurate list at all

How would you rank them?

I'm not trying to debate or anything - I don't know a lot about any of those guys but Carrasco - but that's what BA had in January.

Drabek, Brown, Taylor are unequivocally the top 3 and Knapp's likely ahead of the other two at this point. You could quibble about Carrasco, but they were a lot more willing to deal him than Drabek all along.

Yeah, I figured Drabek had moved ahead of Carrasco at this point. Would you put the rest of the prospects the Indians got in the Phillies' top 10?

The scary part is, the Phillies still have the prospects to pull off the Halladay trade - if they wanted to.

And they would have them both under their control for next year, too. I know there are other things to consider, but if "winning" is your #1 priority, then, well......

Game 1: Hamels

Game 2: Halladay

Game 3: Lee

.........
