I will say that I do agree that it's probably better that they keep their negotiations out of the public eye.

I think I'd almost rather not know the Cubs are going after Jake Peavy or Brian Roberts, rather than spend more time in more threads about trades that never happen. Both went well into the 100's of pages of posts discussing with excitement, anymosity, disappointment and every other kind of emotion, only to lock the threads and no players change hands at all.

Towers was actually the bigger idiot of the two at the winter meetings. First thing he did wrong was try to trade a player without first getting his blessing. That's probably not something you would typically be required to do unless that player had a no trade clause. Guess what?

Hendry has always hated seeing his guys' names revealed in trade rumors. This is nothing new.

It shouldn't matter. You are either getting a good deal or a bad deal. What the fans know before or after a trade is made should have no bearing on whether the deal gets done or not. It's absolutely ridiculous.

And if you really don't like it, do what others have suggested and keep the talks more private. Is it NSBB or GRB's fault that you had 75 some odd people in the war room listening to trade talks and now you don't know who leaked the info? I think not.

But, if you really want to come off looking like an absolute idiot, be sure to let the whole world know that you canceled the deal for the sole reason that everyone already knew about it beforehand, and not because it wasn't going to help the team.

C'mon now. You're too bright to think that's what really happened.

Like TT said, it's way more likely the deal didn't get done because Towers was asking for the sun and the moon, and finally Hendry told him to stick it.

That's what I would honestly hope would happen, but when your resume says you spent an offseason looking for players who can catch the ball, another one looking for fast guys to bat at the top of the order, yet another one looking for guys who are left handed, I don't think it's really that far of a stretch to think Hendry might have cancelled the deal to make an example of whatever idiot decided to go to the press.

I agree. This seems more like Towers running his mouth and trying to take the heat off the fact that he passed on a good package while he had the chance, and now Peavy is injured and untradeable until the offseason... at least.

Roy Halladay has a complete no-trade, but with all the hoopla surrounding him, I haven't heard that he would waive his rights... Is JP making the same mistake in Toronto?

In one of the 43,928 Halladay rumors was a blurb that the Twins had inquired, only to be told by Toronto that they weren't on Halladay's list. So I think at this point Ricciardi and co. have a firm grasp on where Halladay would agree (or has agreed) to be traded.

Just to protagonize ( ;) ) this, I would say that if trade info leaks well in advance of serious discussion it can, if the trade were to never actualize or at least end with the names leaked early, have an effect on named players on a couple different levels. And that's what i think Hendry gets upset about: he's essentially trying to, at least in his opinion, improve his team, and the leaks work against what he is working towards. In the end this should be more of a lesson to general managers than anyone else, though I suppose no large corporation on the verge of making a large acquisition has an easy time of keeping things to themselves. Perhaps Towers and Hendry are the only people in that room, but if a person thinks that those guys aren't bouncing ideas off other people after that meeting, maybe within earshot of people willing to talk to media, they should be advised to look around their own place of employment.

It is, certainly, more advisable for Hendry and Towers to keep quotes like those to themselves, however, i would agree.
