I don't suppose the Jays would part with Rod Barajas?

Nope. But they'd probably give us Michael Barrett.

He was just outrighted to the minors, so he'd probably be available on the cheap.

It worked for the Sox and Podsednik.

Im just saying.

Lou just said in the post game that he could use Fox as a backup C.

Um, Lou does know that Fox was moved to a new position because he wasn't a good catcher, right? Right?!

[shrug] Lou doesn't seem to mind that Theriot isn't a very good SS, regardless of what UZR has to say about it.

UZR has Theriot as a slightly above average defensive SS

My bad for not actually looking up Theriot's UZR...I based my quip on a post in another thread I recall from several weeks ago stating that Theriot had the 4th best UZR in the NL at that time....

An MRI on Geovany Soto's strained left oblique showed "some damage," but a decision on his status likely won't be made until after the All-Star break.

The diagnosis is quite vague right now, but the team plans to play one man short to see how Soto's oblique responds to eight days of rest. Stay tuned.

Jake Fox-3B-Cubs Jul. 9 - 12:45 pm et

Jake Fox could see time behind the plate with Geovany Soto sidelined.

Koyie Hill will almost surely start the next four games, but Fox, a former catcher in the minors, is ready to fill in, if needed.

Fox behind the plate is a brilliant idea.

so they expect Hill to catch both games on Sunday?
Apparently. Fox starting at catcher is not an option under any circumstances whatsoever. Unless they make a move and call up a catcher by then come Hell or high water.

Personally, if he's going to miss the rest of this week anyway I think they should put him on the DL and call up a catcher. Since he hasn't played since Monday they could backdate it to Tuesday. That means he will have already missed 9 of the minimum 15 days by the end of the All-Star break and he'd have less than a week after the end of the break before he'd be eligible to return. The timing actually isn't bad if this had to happen.

Honestly, they may as well DL Soto and bring someone up. If hes going to miss the Cards series anyway, after that, hed just miss the Nationals series and then 1 game in the Phillies series. The again, we alsready have an extra position player, so we'll see what happens.

"Some damage"? So much for the "mild" oblique strain. This sucks. Healthy for a day then just like that two all-stars from 2008 go down. Neither were having a career year, but will still be missed nonetheless.

I'm glad I don't have an oblique

What's the recovery time if they just remove his oblique?

Geovany Soto is currently rehabbing his mild left oblique strain at the Cubs' spring training facility in Mesa, Arizona.

Soto can get special attention down in Mesa, as opposed to fighting for room on a trainer's table with the rest of his major league teammates. "We're going to attack it quickly and see where we're at," he said Monday. "The MRI said [the strain] was mild to moderate. Hopefully we're looking at something like 15 to 20 days, and I'll be back with the team as soon as possible."

If we can get Geo back in 15-20 days, that would be steller.

The Cubs are encouraged by Soto's (oblique) progress and believe he might be back sooner than originally projected, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Recommendation: There's still no precise timetable for his return, but Soto's been feeling good enough that the Cubs are electing to stick with just Koyie Hill and Jake Fox behind the plate for now rather than acquiring another catcher - something they would likely do if they were sure the injury would keep Soto out for a full month.

A little continuation to the good news on Soto's timetable.
