wow just awful. hendry drops the ball again. i've defended him quite a bit, but he's killing us.

Maybe. There still was talk of how the Cubs might not be able to get DeRosa's salary cleared. And if the Indians just wanted a major league ready pitcher (like some reports were claiming) the Cubs only options were really Marshall or Marmol, and both of those were too much for DeRosa. Players like Ascanio or Wells would likely be too little.

Perez's numbers haven't been up to par yet, but his age and his great stuff still would often make him overvalued by teams.

Hendry might have dropped the ball on this one..DeRosa would have been a very good fit for the rest of the year. But we just don't know enough facts to know for sure. We don't know if the Cubs had the payroll, or if they matched up well with the Indians, or even how good this PTBNL is yet.

I would agree that unless the PTBNL is a good to great prospect the Indians have lost in these two deals..they gave more to the Cubs than they're going to get for him just a few months later.

So basically, we could have had him for Jose Ascanio and a PTBNL. Or Kevin Hart and a PTBNL. or Justin Berg and a PTBNL.

(a) chris perez is better than the names you listed.

(b) i like how your PTBNL is just a five-letter asset that apparently does not differ from one team to another.

He's on a roll.

Ive just been served by the not so dynamic duo. whoa is me.

I'd give up Marshall before Wells.

cardinals fans are saying they hope it isn't daryl jones...who is daryl jones?

some guy in their minor league system.

that wouldn't make any sense. it's either a true PTBNL, or it's a guy who just hasn't been identified by the media yet. if it's a PTBNL, then it will be the indians' choice of a few guys down the road, or a guy who was drafted last season and hasn't been in the cards' system for a year. if the indians already know who the guy is that they want and the cardinals agreed to trade him, he'd just be announced as part of the deal right now.

Jones is a fairly highly rated prospect. 22 year old "toolsy" outfielder that put up an .882 OPS with 18 steals in high A and a .909 OPS so far this year in AA. It's either a guy on the DL or someone that was drafted last year. I guess it could be one of those "future consideration" type things where they want to let the season play out a bit before deciding from a list of a few guys.

As much as I wanted DeRosa back at this point, I would have been pissed if Hendry gave up either for him.

ML-ready pitcher aside, if the Cubs can't take on 2.5-3 mil for the rest of the year, we might as well shut down the Transactions board for the rest of the season. Cubs won't be making any worthwhile moves if that's the case.

Too true. I've had the nagging feeling that something along those lines is the case until the sale is finished.

Blargh.

look you just equated chris perez, a guy who can throw 100 mph and struck out 12 guys per 9 IP, to a pitcher with 4.5 K/9 IP and a 1:1 K/BB ratio the past three years. if you don't want to be goofed on, don't do things like that.

Just a horrible day for the Cubs all around. Those who say the pending sale is keeping us from making any moves are probably right. Unfortunately unless Ramirez comes back and catches fire right away this team isn't going anywhere. Bad offense, bad bullpen. Starting pitching is this team's strongest aspect which is not saying much considering the struggles of Dempster and Harden.

:-k

They're the best starting rotation in NL right now.

i have a feeling we are going to acquire teahen or lopez

i hope it is lopez

I'd take Lopez just because he can play 2nd and Teahen can't. I think Teahen's bat is slightly better though.

Really? Even after Lilly and Dempster's most recent starts? Imagine how good we'd be if Harden could get it going.
