I think Hendry ought to look at the real needs of this team and make his primary targets Freddy Sanchez or Jorge Cantu. Either one of these deals could include some bullpen help (Grabow, Burnett, Calero, etc.). Since both of these guys can move over to 2B when Ramirez returns, Fontenot would certainly be part of the deal. As many of us have posted, a Peavy deal would be frosting on the cake, but right now there isn't any cake to frost. I think Wells/Marshall can hold down the 5th spot in the rotation for the rest of the year. Of course this screws up the whole "getting more LH" theory.

Since we love dealing with Baltimore so much we should go after Dennys Baez or Jim Johnson.

Do you really want a guy named Dennys going up their with the bases loaded?

They wouldn't be bad options in the bullpen, but my main concern is getting a hitter with a relief pitcher added in an expanded deal.

What about Brandon Wood?

Wood might be an interesting option, but I wanted to get someone who is a proven ML hitter. If Wood was successful, we could move him to SS and Theriot to 2B after Ramirez returned.

I still say if you can get him, then get him. He may not be able to help dig the Cubs out of the hole this year, but he is signed for 4 mores years I think. That would give the Cubs a nice top of the rotation with Peavy, Z and Lilly. Let Harden walk. Once the ownership gets finalized then you can see what kind of payroll the Cubs will have to address the rest of the teams needs (I.E. the pen) in the offseason. Just my 2 cents.

If we can get him cheaply, then get him. Right now, starting pitching isn't a problem and it doesn't appear to be too big of a problem next year either (Wells, Marshall, Atkins, etc.). The fact that he's signed for 4 more years could be considered a blessing or a curse, since people have pointed out his throwing motion could lead to injury. Also, he's signed for 4 more years, but not at a bargain-basement salary. Adding his salary to Zambrano, Lee, Soriano, Bradley, Dempster, etc. might cause payroll problems in the near future. So if he falls into our lap at a decent price, I'm all for it.

Friend of mine at work tells me that according to ESPN 1000 that Peavys close to being traded to the Brewers or Cardinals. I havnt read that anywhere, and usually, MLBTRs pretty quick to pick that type of thing up. Anyone else heard that?

Haven't heard anything, but that would just be AWESOME!

Nothing on brewersfan.net as of now.

Why would it be awesome for the Cardinals or Brewers to get a legit #1?

is green font always necessary?

Anyway, I talked to him again, and he heard wrong. They arent close to a deal, but they are the favorites to get him.

Yea, I figured all CAPS was just as good as the green font. But I can certainly edit my initial statement so to avoid the confusion in the future...

It wasnt exactly Bruce Levine reporting that a deal was close with the Cards/Brewers.

It was Harry, from the Mac, Jurko, and Harry show who said he heard from a scout at the Sox game that the Cards/Brewers are going hard after Peavy. He said the Scout said one of those 2 teams has jumped ahead of the Cubs even for Peavy, and the other would probably be in 3rd right now for Peavy.

So I guess we will see but it is not good news if Peavy is in our division the next 4 years against us.

FWIW, MLB trade rumors (i dont know how reliable it is) says that the Cubs remain the leader for Peavy but havent discussed the deal recently.

I'll probably laugh out loud when Peavy nixes a deal to either of those teams.

IIRC, the Cardinals are rumored to be one of the 4 NL teams he would definitely accept a trade to.

I think rumor is that the 4 teams he would accept with no question are the Cubs, Dodgers, Cardinals, and Astros.
