he'd have to pile up some wins to get the votes, regardless of how well he pitches

Yep, the people who judge those awards think wins are a relevant statistic to judge a pitcher upon.

Who do you think has the most trade value out of Angel Guzman, Jose Ascanio, Randy Wells, or Sean Marshall? All have positives and negatives. Marshall has done the most in the bigs but may not project to have much more potential. Ascanio has great stuff, is looking alright, but still hasnt done much. Guzman probably has the most potential, was the most highly touted, and is starting to look he can definitely be a good reliever but he has a terrible injury history. Wells has looked good as a starter but is still a bit of a mystery as well.

Probably Ascanio or Marshall. Guzman would be third due to that injury history.

probably should send him to Iowa so he can work on his wins.

:-))

I just thought this needed to be posted again.

Exactly, and if they look at Well's underlying stats he is exhibit A on why W's mean very little when it comes to pitchers actual talent/stuff/ability/effectiveness. But ESPN and BBTN are always talking about W's being so important, so it must be true.

i don't understand how people who cover baseball for a living still don't really understand the game

the mlb network guys are the absolute worst. wayyyyy worse than espn.

as for wells, i don't know how good he can be, but his numbers this season so far are absolutely legit. i don't know how he's missing so many bats, but he is. his strikeout to walk ratio is sexxyyyy

The first two starts I thought it was luck, but I'm starting to think Wells may be for real. I don't think he is a Sub 2.00 ERA ace, but his stuff has been pretty damn good, and he does throw strikes. Definitely has earned a rotation spot for now.

Yeah his first start in MIL. I was thinking it was only a matter of time until he started getting hammered. He wasn't throwing a lot of strikes and he seemed to be giving up a lot of hard hit balls but they were just at guys. But since then he has looked legit, getting ahead, low number of BB, etc. He kind of reminds of Clement when he was here and effective.

Getting ahead, low number of BB, not dependent on pure stuff... that doesn't sound even a bit like Matt Clement.

He doesn't throw as hard as Clement either does he?

This guy is good. But due to his decent but not great minor league numbers, I'm hesitant to believe he'll remain this good. Then again, Johan Santana has a career minor league ERA of 4.79. The light just goes on for some people at the major league level, lets hope Wells is one of those people.

well of course he won't remain this good, he's been absolutely ridiculous so far

as for santana and guys like that, wells doesn't really have the stuff to be that kind of guy. he'll never be a front of the rotation guy, but if he can keep hitting his spots and mixing speeds well, he could potentially end up being a nice middle of the rotation guy.

still though, we're a long way from finding that out. 2 months doesn't really prove anything. let's just hope he keeps this going as long as possible.

i will give credit to badnews though. in recent years i've seen him mention that he's a wells fan and thought he was better than his numbers showed

yeah, he seems like the opposite actually. clement had really good stuff when he was healthy

i miss clement and his chin poof.

Yeah, his peripherals mostly support what he's been doing. The only thing that is way out of line would be his LOB%. It's at 80 percent now, which isn't sustainable. Even his BABIP (.278) is at a reasonable number.

But still, if he keeps pounding the strike zone and mixing it up, he could be a solid starter for a long time.

Wells might not have ace stuff, but he seems to have baseball smarts. As previously noted, he can change speeds well, which is about the most important thing with a pitcher next to having decent control.

Having great stuff isn't everything. Greg Maddux comes to mind-- he never had lights out stuff, but turned out to have a pretty decent career.

I assume decent is an understatement.
