vitters is 1-3 with a 2-run double, 2 K's, walk and HBP. peoria scored two in the top of the 9th to tie it, but in cub fashion, failed to get another run home with the bases loaded and 1 out. junior lake has 3 singles in 5 ABs.

samardzija threw a "complete game": 7 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 3 K, 9 GO/9 FO. robinson was 3-4 (all singles). in the second game, cotts gave up 2 walks, 1 hit and 1 ER in his inning of work. keep up the good work, neal!

tennessee lost 10-7. guyer was 2-5 with a double, wright 2-4, smith 2-5 with a double, castillo 3-4 with a home run. lambert got drilled.

daytona won 3-2, castro was 1-4 with a double. dolis had a solid outing, 5 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 7 GO/5 FO.

It's not the Cubs, but Sean Gallagher had a solid start: 7 2/3, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 K.

The DSL Cubs got their season under way yesterday. I'm going to do some more digging on these guys, but it seems that DSL Cubs 2 is the team with the better prospects on it. The Cubs' major signings from Latin America last year are all on that team: 3B Joel Altagracia ($140,000, 17 years old), SS Carlos Henry ($110,000, 17 years old), and C Ricardo Parra (17 years old).

I can't say I'm particularly familiar with anyone else on either squad, though. So, the box score listings should be a fun exercise in guessing games until things start shaking out.

Also, the EXST Cubs did rather well yesterday.

Larry Suarez threw four shutouts innings and struck out seven, and Jose Made smacked a bases-loaded triple, leading the EXST Cubs to a 4-2 victory over the EXST Giants at Fitch Park Field #1, in one-half of an Extended Spring Training simultaneous doubleheader played this morning in Mesa under partly cloudy skies.

. . .

By throwing four innings today, the 19-year old Suarez became the second Cubs pitcher at EXST to go beyond three innings (RHP Marco Carrillo was the other one, but he was at Fitch Park on an injury-rehab assignment from Daytona).

Throwing a two-seam fastball that breaks bats and is clocked consistently at 94-96 MPH, a nasty breaking ball, and an occasional change-up (just to keep the opposition honest), Suarez is unquestionably the top pitching prospect at EXST. And at 6'4 255+, he bears a resemblance to another Venezuelan Cubs pitcher by the name of Carlos Zambrano.

Signed by Cubs scout Hector Ortega as a 16-year old out of Venezuela for $350,000 the first day of the International Signing Period in 2006, Suarez has been held back a bit by injuries (he had elbow surgery a year ago, and spent most of 2008 rehabbing and getting back into pitching shape), but he's 100% now. He should be the ace of the Boise Hawks pitching staff, unless he gets promoted to Peoria before Boise's season starts next month.

Arizona Phil at The Cub Reporter[/url]"]20-year old Albert Hernandez hit .324 with 17 extra base hits in 54 DSL games last year, and he will likely be the star of DSL Cubs #1 (managed by ex-Cubs 1B prospect Alberto Garcia) this year, but the three most highly-regarded Cubs prospects playing in the DSL right now are 3B Joel Altagracia and SS Carlos Henry (both signed as 16-year olds by the Cubs during the International Signing Period last Summer), and Venezuelan catcher Ricardo Parra, who also signed last Summer and who turned 18 yesterday. (RHP Jose Tineo was signed to a substantial bonus as a 16-year old in July 2007, but he is not presently on a DSL Cubs Active List).

Altagracia (signed for $140K) and Henry (signed for $110K) are now 17, and both are assigned to DSL Cubs #2, as is Parra. If all goes according to plan, I would expect to see all three of them at Fitch Park this time next year.

I'm not going to pay much attention to a 20-year old repeating the DSL. Jose Tineo is on the DSL Cubs Active List because he was suspended for PEDs. Tineo was one of two big post-July 2 Latin American signings in 2007 (the other was RHP Yohan Goznalez who is at extended spring training).
