White Sox Sign Daryle Ward

By Tim Dierkes [May 4 at 8:25am CST]

According to Bobbie Dittmeier of MLB.com, the White Sox signed first baseman/outfielder Daryle Ward and assigned him to Triple A Charlotte. In fact, Ward already homered for the team yesterday. He had been playing in the Atlantic League after the Reds let him go.

Ward, 34 in June, hit .216./.319/.402 in 119 plate appearances for the Cubs last year.

Im happy for him, but to the White Sox really need another old slow guy?

Someone had to take Podsednik's roster spot at Charlotte. And Ward and Podsednik are almost the same player, right?

Ward's entire tenure with the Cubs was made worth it with one swing of the bat against Kevin Gregg last year.

(granted, before last year, he was quite solid as a PH)

Ward was mentioned on the Cubs' radio broadcast tonight as a trivia item. He and his father, Gary Ward, are the only father-son combination to both hit for the cycle in MLB history.

Appropriately, Pat was somewhat incredulous that D. Ward had actually legged out a triple at one point. :-))

I'm thinking it was actually a home run, but he got tired from running 3/4 of the way around the diamond.

My guess would be that an outfielder overran a ball and allowed it to roll to the fence, but because he didn't actually touch the ball he wasn't charged with an error.

BBB's explanation would be more interesting, though. :D
