Graffanino Designated For Assignment

By Drew Silva [May 2 at 1:49pm CST]

According to an MLB.com press release, the Indians have designated infielder Tony Graffanino for assignment.

The move essentially cleared roster space for highly touted outfield prospect Matt LaPorta, who was acquried from the Brewers in last year's CC Sabathia trade. Graffanino, 37 in June, was 3-for-23 in seven games with the Indians this season. He could get a shot elsewhere as a utility infielder.

He could definitely answer the backup third baseman call. Granted, hed be a poor mans DeRosa, but hed also be a rich mans Miles. Id rather see Fox fill the roster spot thats bound to be vacated by Gathright sooner thsn later, but Graffinino could prove usefull to us.

I had this thought at first, then I looked up his numbers on BR. Frankly, I think he's done. Defensively, he'd be equal to or better than Miles. On the other hand, as crazy as it sounds, I think Miles has a better bat at this stage.

Graffianino didn't play in the majors at all last year. He was hitting 130/167/174 when he was cut this year. In 2007, he hit 238/315/390. You have to go all the way back to 2006 to find a season where he wasn't abysmal with the bat. He's now 37, so I wouldn't count on him reverting to the numbers he put up when he was 31-34. He does provide defensive versatility, but I'm not sure he's enough of an upgrade over Miles to pursue.

Everyone says we need a backup third baseman. Even guys like Ty Wiggington and Rich Aurilia wont be available until July at the earliest. Its either as washup, someone from the minors, or being content with Font at 3rd and Miles at second when Aramis is out.

I'm hopefully waiting for another former Sox to get DFA'd once Scotty Pods gets on a two week hot streak while Anderson recover and the Sox go with him and Podsednik over Dewayne Wise, so they can get rid of Gathright.

Wait, what?

He's saying he'd rather see Wise on the Cubs than Gathright.
