Ryan Searle with 4 scoreless innings so far. He's only given up 1 hit in that time.

Daytona scores 8 in the 5th as 12 D-Cubs come to the plate. Dylan Johnston hit a solo HR and Nate Samson had a 2-RbI triple.

Daytona leads it 9-0 in the middle of the 5th.

Ryan Searle's fantastic final line: 6 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K, 11 GO-5 FO. That's 31 GO to 6 FO this season for Searle.

James Russell continues to struggle: 1 IP, 3 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 2 HR.

Marquez Smith with another home run tonight.

Some quick minor league notes from the most recent Cubs.com article:

On Colvin (who btw is 2 for 3 so far tonight with a walk and has his average up to .300 at the moment):

"I think Colvin is starting to feel better," Fleita said. "When you're DH'ing, sometimes you don't feel like you're in the game. It sounds like his at-bats have become more consistent."

And on Mateo:

Marcos Mateo threw four scoreless innings in Daytona's 6-2 win over Dunedin, and may be promoted soon. The Cubs wanted to make sure he was stretched out more before he was promoted to Double-A Tennessee.

Whoever imagined Colvin with 11BB/7K/40AB and a .151 IsoD? Small sample, so he'll probably go 0-8 over the next couple of games. But this is the first time that he's combined good average (.300) with the walks. Kind of fun. He's 23, so he's not totally a fossil yet. If he were to show similar (or with better power) production at AA following a later promotion, who knows.

Oft

Would be nice if Marques Smith could sustain his current type of hitting for a while, and perhaps do so even after a promotion.

Searle is an unusual no-K groundball guy. Must have a pretty good sinker. Often younger guys develop a breaking pitch over time. So if he's basically got a sinker that can get it done even when the hitters know it's coming, it's interesting to imagine who interesting he might become if over the next several years he were to come up with an average slider and an average change, such that he could get some K's.

The way Russell is going at AA and Mateo at Daytona, I don't imagine Russell will hold that rotation spot for a lot longer. I wonder how Cashner is coming along? Might be fun in a week or two if Mateo could move up and get replaced directly by Cashner. Might also be that a Mateo promotion might link with Shafer moving up to Daytona.

I was thinking that at a higher level he would need to expand his repertoire to avoid getting smacked around, but I could be wrong.

sweet - I was hoping to see Shafer in Milwaukee! Hope it warms up in Appleton - at least you didn't open the season there this year :)

Apparently Searle only threw 58 pitches to get through 6 yesterday (the announcers were talking about how Daytona went through a few relievers despite Searle's strong outing with limited pitches and how that is hurting them now with McDaniel injured).
