IT'S THE 10TH GAME

Seriously! On Baseball Tonight (I know, consider the source...) they were talking up all the "division leaders" and whether teams like the Cubs should be worried. Nevermind the fact that they actually still have a winning record. It's ridiculous. It's like trying to predict how worried an NFL team should be after week one.

This would actually be more like the first quarter of the week one game. Its way to early. That being said i cringe whenever i see neal cotts coming in

Is that new math or East Carolina Pirates math?

no, i know the math is wrong, just saying its extremely early to get all worried right now. Sure there are problems but they were a lot worse in 2007.

Let's play this game slightly differently...

Similarities between the Cubs this year and the Cubs last year, after 10 games:

- Team was 6-4 and challenging for the division

- Team was in second, a game behind St. Louis

- Team outscored their opponents by 8 runs total over 10 games (well, only 4 in 2008 to this point)

- Bullpen blew 2 games late, lost one game in the 10th

- Major bullpen concerns about a shaky closer with a ERA around 9 and a lefty that can't get anyone out

- Kosuke is a hitting machine

- Concerns about an expensive starting corner OF not hitting and being hurt (well, last year it took 13 games for the corner OF to be hurt)

You took off the suit?

And agreed that the bullpen is scary right now, but I think it's got enough talent (Heilman, Guzman, Patton) that Rothschild will have it in much better shape control-wise by the end of the year, which should solve the problem.

WHAT? I CAN'T HEAR YOU! LET ME TAKE OFF THE HELMET FIRST!

wow, it's still hot in here.

let me say this: i am still thoroughly unimpressed by our bullpen at this point. perhaps its because neal cotts is down there. i know that every team would like to have 4 shutdown guys in the pen (your LOOGY, ROOGY, 8th inning guy, closer) or at the very least 3 and that expectation is unrealistic for every team. with all of the changes the pen has gone through from the end of last year to now, i would have figured that someone would have stepped up. supposedly this team should be the class of the division. i know its early which is why i'm not putting too much into the record at this point, but the bullpen does not look like a world class pen right now.

i do have the perrogative to change my mind in the next few weeks. except on cotts. (quick backstory before anyone asks, game one down in tampa last year, dempster goes out with a 1 run lead or tied, don't remember, first guy cotts faced, solo shot, we lose by 1 run, hated him ever since.)

perhaps its just my paranoia that during the offseason, all of those trades for bullpen pitchers were like the knicks made a few years ago when they made a few trades too many.

The bullpen would be a lot better if the starting pitchers didn't give up 5 runs per game. The talent in the pen is there it just hasn't shown up yet. Cotts is terrible and perhaps Piniella should consider not putting him in every game.
