2 NL Cy Young's (4 other seasons in the top 3 in the award)

that's because he happened to have two good years when nobody else was that good. schilling had years where he was just as good as glavine, but had the misfortune of pitching when randy johnson and pedro were even better.

8 times in Top 10 in ERA

schilling had 9.

not saying glavine isn't a hall of famer - i just think it's close to a no-brainer that schilling should be too.

and johan in 2004.

if randy johnson and johan santana didn't combine for 3 of the best season of all time in a 4 year span, schilling would have 3 cy youngs

I think Schilling is in because:

A) His numbers might not be the most dominant ever, but they're pretty solid.

B) He won 1 World Series against the glow of Yankees fever, and then won a 2nd World Series in the glow of Red Sox redemption -- both of which garnered huge amounts of press and added acknowledgment of his accomplishments. In short, he won his championships with the most favorable concentration of press coverage imaginable.

B -- it might not be right, but the HOF is based on votes. And recognition is the first part of getting a vote. Schilling, above all, is highly recognized.

I think Shilling gets in. I just don't think he'll get in quickly. Certainly not first ballot. But I'd be shocked if he isn't in 4 or 5 years later.

I think he'll benefit from the steroids controversy. Being as outspoken as he is, he's either been clean or is beyond stupid. Barring a shock like a Bloody Syringe or something, he'll eventually get in as voters start figuring out how to deal with borderline players of that era. I think you'll have a lot of voters saying "well, if half the league hadn't been on PEDs he would have had better numbers" or "if he would have been on PEDs he would have stayed healthier and got the numbers".

Never mind the fact that voters are going to HAVE to readjust their common benchmarks for pitchers. Because if the benchmark remains 300 wins, it won't be too long before NO pitchers are going to the Hall.

if pedro doesn't get in first ballot because he doesn't have 300 wins, everyone who didn't vote for him should be lined up and kicked in the crotch.

As usual, you are far too kind.
