Yeah, I'm all for rewarding upset picks, but I think what people are trying to say is that it shouldn't influence your actual opinions so much, by making the entire score be basically about how many upsets you picked.
And I think that's accomplished by the system I'm using for the Second Chance contest, which is a flat one-point bonus for picking an upset regardless of the difference in seedings. We won't have the situation where somebody can have more bonus points than points for correct picks (in the end I don't think it will be that way in this contest either, but time will tell).

the scoring system being used sucks. why reinvent the wheel?

Disagree. This is a great scoring system. It doesn't take any skill to go chalk by picking all the favorites. It takes guts to pick 5s over 12s like Western Kentucky, Arizona and Wisconsin and props to those that picked Cleveland State.

You didn't pick any upsets and you were penalized for it. It's a simple as that.

i don't care that i'm doing bad. i'd be doing bad with either scoring system, its irrelevant to my point.

the simplest and best scoring system is to reward people who pick the most correct games. this scoring system doesn't do that. i don't care about who has "guts" or some other nonsense, it should be who picks the winners correctly regardless if its an upset or not.

Those pools tend to be boring with the majority of the participants picking the lower seeds. Most brackets look relatively the same. It's a lot harder to pick upsets and those that do should be rewarded.

You are rewarded. You get the point/s for the correct pick and everyone else doesn't.

$1,000,000 for picking every game correctly or $10,000 for finishing first nationally (based on Yahoo's default scoring system without bonus points for picking upsets). There's no prize for winning the group, just bragging rights.

I've done this scoring before and I found it to be pretty horrible. Pretty much just pick all underdogs. You'll miss on most your picks, but still end up winning by a good margin. I like the idea of rewarding successfully picking upsets, but not with such a drastic bonus.

Anyone complaining about the scoring system only has himself to blame for not paying attention to this post. It's pretty much the only reason I picked teams like Arizona and picked all the 9s and 10s since those are usually relatively even games anyway and you might as well gamble on the bonus. Imagine if this tournament had been like just about any other without as many top seeds advancing, the disparity between this scoring and normal scoring would be even greater.

Too bad there's no prize for winning the group. I guess I'll settle for bragging rights after the Heels take care of business tomorrow night.

if michigan st wins (unlikely), you finish second - it'd be TrannyTiger, you, me. If the heels win then it's you then me, then someone else.
