so we're going to trade a guy we don't want for another guy we don't want.
That's basically what the Cubs did when they traded Marquis for Vizcaino in the first place.

True. I should've said "so we're going to trade a guy we don't want who has no use for another guy we don't want who has no use."

What he's saying is that it may have been cheaper to just release Marquis then to trade him for a bad contract.

I don't think so. There is no way that the Cubs releasing Marquis would ever have been cheaper. They would have had to pay his full contract if that happened. Even if the Cubs release Vizcaino today, they still save approximately 5 million dollars over what releasing Marquis would have done.

I didn't really mean that. I just meant that it shouldn't be surprising that the Cubs would trade one unwanted player for another since they already had a track record of doing so.

That's some kind of math that has dropping Marquis as cheaper than trading him for half his salary.

Must be the same math Crosby is using here:

"I want to play," Crosby said. "I don't care where I play as long as I'm somewhere where I can play every day. Ideally, I want to play shortstop. But it kind of goes in progression: If I can't play shortstop every day, I want to play somewhere every day. If I can't do that, then I want to get in there are much as I can."

Bobby, baby, you're a career .239/.306/.380 hitter who has put up worse numbers than that each of the last 3 years. That makes you Neifi Perez, not someone worthy of a everyday job babe. The real progression you're looking at is bench, Japan, then insurance sales.

Aren't the Cubs paying part of Marquis' salary? I thought that they had given the Rockies money to even things out somewhat.

I think about $825,000. Marquis is making 9.8, Vizcaino is making 3.5. Cubs are paying $4.3, Rockies are paying $9m. But the Cubs are on the hook for another $500k if they cut him next year, which would put their total at $4.8, or $5m less than if they kept and/or cut Marquis. Of course, if they get desperate and bring back Vizcaino, they'll still pay about $8.5m total.

The girls think Bobby Crosby is hot and looks sort of like Brad Pitt. Acquiring him will add hundreds in ticket revenues.
