ooooh era+ as end-all be-all.

Yeah, it's funny how ERA+ is thrown around as an "advanced" stat just because it's normalized. Garland regression will be fun, especially as Steve Phillips and John Kruk wonder what happened to such a wonderful pitcher. This would be a good time to remind everyone that Kruk's BALL+ rating is 50.

Garland is what his ERA+ says he is. You're right about ERA+ itself, but you're still wrong.

To whoever responded to my post... what is to say that Garland isn't as bad as his 2008 season? My impression is he's following the career path of Jeff Weaver and Carlos Silva. They had some okay seasons, then they became useless pretty quick.

What he did last year falls pretty much in his career norms. Being 28 he might get a bit better, but I don't see any sign of it.

Looks like Garland is signing with Arizona:

The Arizona Republic reports that Jon Garland and the Diamondbacks have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with an option for 2010.

According to the newspaper, "Garland's guaranteed money is believed to be in the $6 million to $8 million range" and it sounds like the option is a mutual one. Garland reportedly turned down a two-year, $14 million offer from Arizona last week.

I would have liked to have beaten this offer by slightly more, but alas, it's not my money or my team.

A rotation of Webb/Haren/Davis/Garland/Scherzer or Petit should certainly be a top 5 NL rotation, especially if Scherzer pitches to his potential.

Garland gets $6.25MM in '09 and the 2010 option for $10MM has a $2.5MM buyout if the D'Backs reject it. If Garland rejects it it's a $1MM buyout. Bottom line: $8.75MM guaranteed
.

So it's either 1y at 8.75m or 2y at 16.25m. Seems like kind of a lot for Garland. I guess he has the best potential out of Wolf, Odalis Perez and Braden Looper.
