But he was already suspended four games. You're thinking he's going to get 12 overall? Highly unlikely, even for Goodell. Stallworth won't even get that much and he killed a guy and is serving jail time.

Who was suspended 4 games?

Plaxico.

He was suspended by the Giants, not the NFL. The NFL can still suspend him.

I know, but the question is will the suspended him 4 games or 8 games. Personally I think he gets the 4 games.

Regardless, he won't be suspended for half the season. Four is the absolute max he'll get.

Exactly, add in the four from last yr and he would have gotten 8 games in total. Giving him 12 would open a door for the NFLPA to file and win an appeal.

I don't think the Giants suspension constitutes a hold on what Goodell can do, but I agree 4 games is more likely. I was just throwing it out there for discussion. Like I said, I would take Plax. I'd prefer the 4 games to be served at the beginning of the year, of course.

As long as Plax would be allow to participate in training camp and the preseason, then I too would prefer the four games at the beginning of the season.

Why are people combining the seperate suspensions? The Giants suspended him while he was out with a gunshot wound. The NFL will suspend him for violating the law. They aren't one in the same. There is very little room for the NFLPA to win any sort of appeal given the power they allowed the commissioner to have in regards to suspensions.

So you really think the league will suspend him eight games? I feel that'll leave a bit of a backlash with the teams, as they might feel that there is no point in suspending their own player if the league is going to go on to give a more ridiculous punishment on top of it.

Again, no one is doubting he'll get four, but I just can't see eight. Who has gotten 8+ games in this league? Vick, Pacman, Ricky Williams, Chris Henry and Tank Johnson? We all know what Vick and Pacman did, Williams violated the substance abuse policy, Henry got arrested four times in a year or something like that, and Tank spent two months in jail after violating his probation. Plaxico isn't going to get the same number of games as these guys for what he did, especially when he won't serve jail time until 2010, and as far as I know, he's never had other major run-ins with the law (correct me if I'm wrong). I really just can't see it being more than four games.

Posted
I'm not saying he'll get 8, I'm saying it's pointless to discuss the fact that NY already suspended him for 4 games. They suspended him for general douchebaggery when he was already hurt and unable to play. The league is going to suspend him for breaking the law. It's a seperate situation.

Manhattan District Attorney: Burress Case Headed to Grand Jury

By David Haugh 10:15 a.m.

Another legal development Wednesday made the pursuit of Plaxico Burress more complicated for the Bears or any other interested team.

Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau said a grand jury will hear the case against Burress next month, according to a report in the New York Daily News. That could affect the date of Burress’ next scheduled court appearance, Sept. 23, and accelerate the process to the point where a trial during the NFL season would be possible if a quick indictment is handed down.

i'm really drinking the kool-aid this year. i think we come out and just annihilate, regardless of if we have plax or not. 14-2, yeah, i'm crazy, but it feels good.

I had to double check and see who posted this. I thought all your teams were cursed ;)

Ron Turner had some things to say on the Afternoon Saloon yesterday...

On whether Greg Olsen prepared to take that next step:

"Yeah, I think you would have seen that anyway with Greg, same thing I talked about with Devin [Hester], Greg's in his third year now coming up and he's gotten better and better. He's had sensational OTA's, a sensational offseason. A lot of guys have stepped up and had done some good things. I would have to say of all of them, Greg's had the best of any of them as far as chemistry, as far as making plays, as far as what he's done and I think he was ready to make that move anyway. He and Jerry [Angelo] have already developed chemistry and a relationship on the field that can be something special. And I think he's going to have a tremendous year."

On the current group of receivers on the roster:

"I'm real pleased with how they did in the OTA's, and obviously you know, we don't have pads on and all that kind of stuff. It's not games, I understand all that. I think they're going step up and be good players. Earl Bennett is looking like Earl Bennett that we thought we were going to get when we drafted him and sometimes it takes people a little while and he's playing fast.

"He came in March to minicamp even before Jay was here and all the coaches said 'Wow he looks like a different guy'. He's playing at a different level. And then when we got Jay, again, they're so familiar with themselves; he's familiar with Jay that it helps his confidence. So he's playing really well and he's playing like we saw him play on film in a very good conference, so I think Earl's going to have a good year. And you talk about Brandon Rideau. He's looking really good in the OTA's that we're having. Juanquin Iglesias started out a little slow in the OTA's to be honest and he and I sat down and we had a talk and he's, you know, it's a process and he's learning the intensity you have to play with, the speed that you have to play with and he made huge strides I'd say in the 2nd half of OTA's.

"And then we have Johnny Knox, a guy we got in the 5th round who's been very impressive, he ran a 4.32 at the combine. He tied for the 2nd fastest time and the best thing about it is, what we've seen through 13 practices with him is that he plays at that speed."

More at the link...

I really have a feeling that Johnny Knox is going to make some big plays for us this year, even if he can only run one route (which I don't think will be the case).

I'd like to see him wind up in the slot this year... Not a fan of Rashied and Knox probably has the most upside of the available guys. Nothing like a great QB to bring out the upside in a young wideout.

And count me as one who thinks we will be fine without adding a WR (although I would obviously love to get a #1 and move everyone else down a slot).

Olsen is going to be Cutler's best friend. Plenty of very good offenses have relied heavily on their TE as their primary target and Olsen is going to beast it this year.

Something had to be lost in the translation there. Either Turner said, "Jay" instead of "Jerry" or the writer is blending two very different sentences into one.

Yea, it had to be that he was saying, "Jay." I thought the same thing.

My thought exactly. I must have re-read that sentence 4 times.

Stallworth suspended indefinitely...wonder if this will play into account for teams looking at Plax?

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news;_ylt=AuMtwY4reLCscoT701Pet0o5nYcB?slug=ap-browns-stallworthsuspended&prov=ap&type=lgns

I figured Goodell would use the Big Hammer on Stallworth.

He killed a person.

Then he got off light on a plea deal.

Personally, I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable with him ever playing in the NFL again.

I understand and see the Bears group of WR as being talented, but unproven. I get that. Getting a WR a good QB is half the battle, I get that. But with the current WR on the roster (admittedly, some may not be on the team come the season), doesn't really inspire me as a fan:

Devin Aromashodu (6 games, 7 rec)

Earl Bennett (zero games)

John Broussard *8 games 4 rec)

Rashied Davis

Deven Hester

Juaquin Iglesias*

Johnny Knox*

Eric Peterman*

Brandon Rideau (2 games)

Derek Kinder*

So you have 4 rookies (Knox/Iggy/Kinder/Peterman), a 2nd yr WR with no game experience (Bennett), 3 WR who seem destined for the practice squad one of which is a rookie (Broussard, Aromashodu and Peterman), a still developing WR (Hester), an organization player (Rideau) and a bottom of the depth chart WR (Davis). To me potential is great, and having a great QB is key, but to expect Cutler to help developed all of these WR's is not overly smart. Not to mention if the Bears hierarchy (ie Angelo and Smith) really like what they have at WR then why not come out and flat out deny they have interests in available WR? Angelo going for Boldin at the draft, then flip flopping on Plax, tells me that while they do like what they have, but would love to bring in a vet WR with skill the Bears do not currently have.

I get Olsen could/should have a big year this yr, and I get Forte should see prolly a slight uptick in recieving numbers this yr, but the Bears do need a WR who can take pressure off Hester. It's as simple as that. And there isn't a WR on the roster that can do that.

Angelo isn't flip flopping on Plax. He had some quotes that one headline writer decided to frame as Jerry refusing to go after Plax, but it was very clear from the start he was open to the idea.

I understand that the WR crop doesn't make eyeballs pop out of their sockets, but it seems to me everyone is making the mistake of assuming because a receiver is unproven, that receiver will never be able to do anything.

It's a false assumption. The NFL especially -- players are breaking out all the time, turnover is high. There's always players deep on someone's roster who will suddenly make an impact. The examples are all over the league.

I just think it's wrong to say "there's no experience here" and jump to the conclusion that there's no chance for any of them to succeed. The two aren't necessarily connected.
