Rotoworld:

A source told Gerry Fraley that the Braves increased their offer to A.J. Burnett to $80 million over five years.

Not only are they going the extra year, but they're apparently matching the Yankees' offer of a $16 million salary. They had been $60 million for four years. With the CC Sabathia matter decided, everything else could tumble into place soon. That may involve Burnett joining Atlanta and Lowe jumping to the Yankees, leaving Oliver Perez and Ben Sheets as perhaps the best SPs remaining.

I just don't see him turning that down.

Watching a generally smart team like the Braves offer 5/80 to a guy that never stays healthy makes the "I hope Peavy doesn't suck in a few years because that contract is awful" look even more like a joke. The Cubs are getting a young ace who has been healthy for the most part on a shorter deal.

I suppose the bright side of the ridiculous contract offer is that it should become even easier to move Marquis if he isn't going to the Pads.

All of that to the guy that I was forced to drop in fantasy at the beginning of the season because he would literally give up some of the ugliest statlines you see. Now I know he came on after that, but there were periods where he was giving up like 6 runs a game every few games.

I know it's cherry picking, but a few boxcores from last season:

4 innings/ 6 ER

5 innings/ 4 ER

6 innings/5 ER

4 innings/ 8 ER

5 innings/ 8 ER

7 innings/ 6 ER

5 innings/ 7 ER

5 innings/4 ER

6 innings/ 4 ER

6 innings/ 4 ER

7 innings/5 ER

Again, I know it's cherry picking, but it's not like it was only a few games.

That's about a third of his starts there.

I've always said that Burnett was the most overrated FA pitcher, especially considering his injury history. I would've taken a chance on Sheets for less money and years or Lowe in spite of his age.

Wow. I'm gonna take a dump and sell it on EBay. If this is the current market, my offer for it should come in around $250-300.

Maybe not yours, but AJ might command that.

The New York Yankees, making a hard late charge to beat out the Atlanta Braves for A.J. Burnett, offered the free agent right-hander a guaranteed five-year contract Wednesday, a baseball source told ESPN.com.

Although the total dollar figure isn't known, Burnett's agent, Darek Braunecker, is believed to be seeking a deal approaching Carlos Zambrano's five-year, $91.5 million contract with the Chicago Cubs.

Has Zambrano slipped so far that he's now getting matched up with AJ Burnett in salary negotiations?

If people are willing to take the blinders off and look at Zambrano's numbers the past two seasons... then yeah, he kind of has. He's still been better than Burnett, but yeah. Zambrano hasn't exactly been ace quality for a few years now
