Instead of the expensive LH RFs (Abreu, Ibanez, Dunn, etc.), how about trading for a RF that would strictly be a platoon with DeRosa or Johnson. I would think most of these guys would be readily available for the right price: Scott (O's), Smith (Rockies), Kubel (Twins), etc.

Personally, I would still like to go after McLouth (Pirates). Possibly a deal involving Wilson (bad contract) and McLouth for Theriot plus others.

Scott shouldn't cost us more than Cedeno plus a young pitcher. Maybe we could work out an expanded deal to get BRob and Scott.

If we could sign Furcal, an expanded deal with the Twins could involve Slowey and Kubel for Theriot (they need a SS badly), Marshall, and other prospects.

While none of these RFs have the stats of the expensive guys, they might put up very good numbers in a platoon system. Also, it would be nice to get some players that are on the right side of 30 years old.

I don't see the Pirates trading McLouth at all, and if they do, they certaintly wouldn't trade him for a package where Theriot is the center piece. McLouth may not repeat his performance he had this year, but his performance this year alone should be able to net them at least somewhat premier player/prospect. He's a major league ready center fielder, a gold glover (debateable), and coming off of an impressive year for a CF'er. There's no way they trade that for a dime-a-dozen shortstop and prospects, unless one of the prospects is top tier

Why would the Twins trade Slowey?

Remember though...they are the Pirates.

They gave us Aramis Ramirez. 8-)

Yeah, but isn't McLouth under control for a few more years?

Fred Lewis from San Francisco could be be a potential target, he isn't a big power guy/producer but he is speedy has a decent OBP and is fast so he could fall under the "athletic" category that Hendry/Piniella seem so enamored with.

From rotoworld...

The Boston Globe's Nick Carafdo believes the Tigers are "contemplating a deal with Boston to send either Nate Robertson or Dontrelle Willis for (Julio) Lugo, but some money issues must be resolved."

It's a deal that's been whispered for a while now, but it's still unclear if there's really anything to it. Lugo is owed $18 million over the next two years, while Robertson is due $17 million and Willis is set to earn $22 million. Especially after factoring in the cash, Robertson looks like the more attractive property. However, his ERA has gone from 3.84 in 2006 to 4.76 in 2007 to 6.35 last season.

Julio Lugo = Dontrelle Willis?

Seriously? I know Dontrelle has had a horrendous past few seasons that keep getting worse, but wouldn't he be someone worth while to take a chance on, especially they would trade for someone like Cedeno for him straight up, and I would assume they'd throw some cash our way to cover some of his remaining contract? Despite his troubles, should a player like Cedeno for Willis straight up be a no brainer? Cedeno and Lugo were pretty close last year in offensive production. Cedeno is also cheaper and younger, and will be riding the pine on our team.

Some of these trades that I suggested are based on the assumption we aren't getting Peavy. When I see all of the names being thrown about for Peavy (and BRob last year), I can't help thinking some of these players like McLouth might be available for the right package of prospects. When you're dealing with lower budget teams, you might be able to offer enough quantity to justify them trading one of their better players. Also, if a bad contract (Jack Wilson) is involved it makes it more feasible. Obviously, you might have to overpay in prospects to get younger players (McLouth, Cain, Greinke, DeJesus, Hermida, Slowey, etc.), but it might be worth it in the long run. As I stated before, I would rather go young (Hermida, McLouth, etc.) than overpay in cash with Abreu or Ibanez.
