Delmon Young Available?

By Tim Dierkes [October 6 at 8:44am CST]

According to Sid Hartman of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune:

The Twins won't talk about it, but it's expected that Delmon Young, the left fielder they obtained from Tampa Bay before this past season, will be made available on the trade market.

It seems an odd time to shop Young, but moving him for a shortstop or third baseman might clear the way for an outfield of Michael Cuddyer, Carlos Gomez, and Denard Span.

Young, 23, hit .290/.336/.405 in 623 plate appearances. He made some progress in his walk rate, and at least slugged .448 after June 1st.

He's not a lefty, but he would be an interesting possibility since he's played all 3 OF positions.

Wouldn't mind a Cedeno/fukudome/ (insert minor league pitcher) for him

If they'll go for Theriot, then great. If not, then I'm not interested.

They won't do Cedeno for Young after trading Garza away to get him.

Hendry's likely to go after Furcal again, isn't he? If he gets him, Theriot could be prime trade bait.

even if Hendry doesnt go after Furcal, theriot for young would be a very nice trade. cedeno could step in and possibly out hit theriot

You're playing pretty fast and loose with the word "prime".

No.

he could.

With the huge exception of OBP, Theriot's offense this season was not even close to good. That .387 OBP would also likely come down with his batting average not likely to stay at .307

Why is it not likely? Because you don't like him?

Delmon Young is Bengie Molina plate discipline with Michael Bourn batted ball profile. Seriously. The guy has no idea what to swing at and then when he does, he hits it in the ground (probably because he has no idea what hes swinging at). All of which leads him to have the IsoP of a middle infielder, yet hes a bad defensive corner OF. On the plus side his BB rate has gone from AJ Pierzynski terrible to only Pacido Polanco terrible!!!

i haven't looked too closely at the stats but I assume his BABIP is a little bit high for his LD%

fangraphs.com.

And no..his BABIP is actually in line with his LD percentage (23.2% with a BABIP of .340) If anything, it's just a touch low, but it's pretty much right on.

Considering his GB and FB rates, his BABIP is actually decently low.

The fact that we have to consider trading theriot for young, means that we basically do not want young anywhere near this team next year. Young might be good at some point, but I would wager on "massive bust". Also, he's got about a 5% chance to outproduce Pie at this point, considering Defense which he is pretty awful at and Pie is ridiculous. So yeah, I'd probably trade Riot for him, but that may only be because I hate Theriot and would even prefer some horrid hitter who makes pretty plays on D. When I see theriot toss up a noodle that should embarass anyone outside of Jacque Jones and Juan Pierre, it makes a part of me die inside.
