This Jared Burton guy is a clown. If the Cubs were really a big deal to you, you wouldn't make plans for October in a year that the Cubs were obviously going to at least have a good chance of making the playoffs.

Missing for work is at least understandable, but going to the Smoky Mountains because your girlfriend won't let you reschedule? Lame.

I couldn't agree more.

Nothing will stop me from being in Chicago when the Cubs win it all.

Ditto, and if that girl wouldn't let me live out my passion of seeing the Cubs win the World Series... She would be gone, that's not something you take from a loved one.

Only a true fanatic would have believed back in June that Chicago's most hapless team would still be batting balls in Wrigley on Oct. 7. But the Cubs won a few games early on. And then a few more. A string of luck started to look like—to use a term favored by sports fans—destiny.

A string of luck? Only a true fanatic would've believed in JUNE that the Cubs would be in the playoffs? What?

I love when people who know even less about sports than sportswriters write about them.

Standings at the end of June 22

Yes, only a true fanatic would have believed that the team with the best record in baseball would make the playoffs.

I got married in late October 2005, knowing full well the Cubs wouldn't be playing. When we started planning trips for this year, my wife knew the anniversary trip wasn't happening at the same time, even if it coincided with the Bears bye week. We've been invited to things throughout October and she just tells people, "It depends on the playoff schedule." I love her.

yeah, pretty much the same here. this dude is weak. scheduled in june? he's not even married to her? pathetic.

to top it off, the WS wouldn't even start until Oct. 22 so he wouldn't be missing the Cubs first championship in 100 years if he's going on vacation the "second week of October".

What a joke this Jarrett guy is. I graduated college in May and my plans after that were to travel internationally and teach English. I'm going to China in mid-November solely for the reason that I've thought the Cubs can do it this year. I realized this back in March. This guy is a "die-hard"? Give me a break.

I've seen the Cubs 15 times at Wrigley this season, twice at Busch, Big Z's no-hitter in Milwaukee, and the last Spring Training game on Mar. 29 in Vegas. This is the season and I'll be damned if October comes around and I think to myself "Oh wow, the Cubs are in the World Series. What am I gonna do now?" Real fans know when the playoffs occur.

I didn't even realize this!

Great point. He won't even miss the World Series, but I bet he still won't go to it and he'll use this as an excuse for that too.

"Nah, I didn't go. My girlfriend was tired from our trip two weeks ago."
