Chicago radio, tv, etc. has been reporting all day that if the Cubs sweep the Brewers they clinch the division on Thursday afternoon. This is half right. A Cub sweep eliminates the Brew Crew from the divisional race, but the Astros still need to lose one more game before Thursday afternoon for the clinch.

If the Cubs sweep their record will be 93-58, eliminating the Brewers on Thursday afternoon.

If the Astros win Tueday and Wednesday at Florida, their record will be 82-69. They don't play until Thursday night.

Math: 163-93-69= 1 for the Astros to be eliminated.

Then it would clinch a tie for the division.

Correct. And as a side note, the Astros have Oswalt and Wandy going the next two nights so the likelyhood they win the next two is very high.

If we do sweep the Brewers, and after that, The Cubs dont win another game, and the Astros dont lose another, game, The entire Chicago Cubs organization and fan base should march all the way to Houston and present them with the division title.

This brings up an interesting scenario.

Say the Cubs and Astros finish the year both clinching a playoff berth but the Cubs are one game ahead of the Astros, would MLB be forced to play final postponed game in order to decide who goes in as division champs and who goes in as the wild card?

The first tiebreaker is head-to-head in these cases, but the Astros only hold a 9-8 advantage there. The last game could decide the first tiebreaker as well. The second tiebreaker is intra-division winning percentage, which (right now) the Cubs own.

Granted, the odds of this is extremely low and would require a monumental Cubs collapse, but it's interesting to think about.
