His ERA is now lower than Ted Lilly's and it would be lower than Sean Marshall's if Marshall pitched the whole season. Congratulations JM. Thanks for working hard Jason.

Marquis is not a whole lot different in quality from Jon Garland, yet Marquis is a pariah and Garland will probably get a 4/42 deal this offseason. Go figure.

He has honestly pitched pretty damn well of late. I wouldn't mind him being middle relief in the playoffs insted of Howry pitching.

i think i'll consider this a rare occurrence that i was right about something.

back in early May he looked like DFA material, but was a victim of a bloated BABIP at the time. he's turned it around as his luck has better evened out.

true to form though, I did also say we'd lean heavily on Hill in the playoffs so win some, lose some I guess...

you should make a thread where you brag about it

I know it's something that isn't quantifiable, but Marquis had a different aura around him tonight.

was it purple

What color was the egg, I hope it was of the Cadbury kind.

well his babip has been .247 in june, .230 in july and .265 in august, so i'd say his luck has more than evened out.

but yeah, he's really not that bad.

When he's on his game and pitching to ground balls rather than giving up fly balls, wouldn't we expect his BABIP to be lower anyway? Yes, those are significantly lower than league average. As a non-strikeout pitcher who gets shelled when he gets the ball up, but is pretty decent when pitching to his strength, that should be expected. How has the LD% looked?

How has the LD% looked?

April: 21.6% in 28-1/3 IP

May: 25.5% in 27-2/3 IP

June: 17.3% in 29-1/3 IP

July: 11.7% in 26 IP

August: 20.6% in 30 IP

Sept: 12.8% in 13-1/3 IP

18.4% opp LD since the start of June

So he got somewhat lucky in August, but has been pretty good at keeping the ball down generally since May?

As long as you consider Jason Marquis your #5 starter, he's decent. The problem has always been about the raised expectations because of his contract. You can't blame Marquis for taking the money.

quite honestly we signed him at 28 years old and he did have some success prior to his abysmal 05 year with the cardinals. Not to mention he has always had good "stuff." Its always been his inability to consistently pitch to his strengths that has hurt him. Based on all of this I understand why we signed him.

The better he pitches this month the easier it will be to trade him.

If the Cubs have the same rotation next season with him as the #5, I am ok with that.

Agreed. But we've really needed him the last few weeks and he has come through.

I still don't think, all other arms being healthy, that he should make the playoff roster. But his contribution is definitely appreciated.
