The only thing I can tell about that call that maybe the ref saw is that even though Roby tripped all by himself, when he fell down a Bear had one hand touching his back. As soon as Roby hits the ground with the Bear touching him, the play is dead..right before the fumble. It's a stupid rule to call that down by contact, but that's what the NFL rules say.

That's what was ruled, but that's not why the play wasn't overturned. They "couldn't" overturn it because the refs stopped paying attention and therefore couldn't prove that the Bears recovered the ball.

It was laziness with a hint of incompetence at best.

That's what the announcers speculated was the reason the refs might have a problem overturning it, but all the ref said that the play stood as called. He could just as easily have been ruling that he was actually down by contact as anything to do with which team recovered. Many times on complicated plays like this, you hear the announcers go on and on about how the referee is checking this, when actually they ruled something completely different. I wouldn't base anything on what the announcers believe is the reason.

No, they said they confirmed it with the replay official during the following break.

Hmm..I didn't hear that. Wow. That is terrible. If there is no clear winner going into a scrum, then you award the ball to the person who comes out with the ball. That was clearly the Bears who came out with the ball.

And Madden does it again..he says that last year they liked to play Gonzalez in the slot and Wayne on the outside. The Colts have been playing Wayne in the slot frequently on 3 WR formations for years. It's not any different this year.

He also talked up how the Colts do a good job protecting the run up the middle on 3rd down about 10 minutes after Forte's TD.

He's fallen sooooo far from where he was. I'd rather hear almost anyone else at this point.

Did you expect Madden to be on the ball? The only reason he isn't as bad as Joe Morgan is that he actually talks about the game, not about random crap.

Seriously, it really disturbs me that the refs make that bogus roughing call and we haven't seen any up the middle blitzes since.

It's like they are controlling what the defense is allowed to do. That really bugs me. This isn't the football I remember in years past, and it's definitely less enjoyable.

Got jobbed on that fumble call, but otherwise gotta be pretty happy with the situation at this point. I'd take it every time.

Uh oh, Forte might be hurt.

he's shaken up because the league lets bob sanders helmet tackle every single time. everyone raves about his hard-hitting ability, but he would be nothing if he couldn't lead with his helmet. one day, he's going to get his neck broken.

Yes, Bob Sanders "would be nothing" without helmet leading tackles. Same with Ronnie Lott, Mark Carrier, and Jack Tatum--only good because they could hit hard.

I don't know about all that, but that was definitely a rule-book violation on that play and it wasn't called.

Jack Tatum was good because he was a cheapshot artist.

Yep, Bob Sanders just smashes in head first every freaking time. I thought I was the only one to notice this, but seriously. They have to start calling this for his sake.

he was a headhunter that played in a league before rules were implememented.
