I didn't see this posted anywhere else, but I just heard Lou's post-game press conference and he said that Harden most likely wouldn't pitch again until the St. Louis series. Does anyone know whether he is having arm problems or is this just a pro-active skipped start to try to keep him strong down the stretch?

With the Cubs basically a shoe in for the playoffs, they are resting most of the starting pitchers who have "dead arm" from pitching a full or close to full season. That is why Z was skipped today. Most likely we'll see Shark or some minor leaguers get some spot starts come tomorrow.

Nothing to worry about.

No doubt. This thread title scared me to death. With Z not going today, this isn't what I wanted to hear!

We should be happy Z didn't go today. It's a good thing.

The fact that there's been something wrong lately wasn't news.

Is this a typical thing? Will all contending teams be doing the same thing?

I'd imagine if the Angels had Rich Harden or a struggling Z, they'd do it too.

If they have the luxury of a lead that will allow it, yes.

Or a converted reliever in Dempster. If we plan on going deep in the playoff these guys have to be fresh. It's really that simple. We have the best record in baseball with a month to go. Lou knows what he's doing...Relax and plan for October.

There's been a rash of mistitled threads intended for humorous results. I enjoy them. Every thread I start is going to be like that now! I wish I broke the Z dead arm post...

"Carlos Zambrano is dead..."

"In his arm and will get a few days more of rest to stay fresh"

Lieber should get the start tommorrow and push everyone back a day further Z and Dempster could use the rest. We must have Zambrano healthy.

Bart: That's right: dead serious about going to Itchy and Scratchy Land.

Lieber pitched two innings last night in Peoria. He should see time as a starter, but I don't think it'll be tomorrow.

So if he's not starting until the series in St. Louis, that'll be anywhere from 10-12 days between pitching depending on what game he starts. I'm all for giving our three top pitchers extra days off down the stretch, but this seems excessive.

boston did it last year when they were pretty much a lock for the playoffs, even though everyone was crapping their pants when the yankees made a run and got within 3 games of the sox. they went to a 6-man rotation to give daisuke, schilling and beckett more rest, and okajima pitched only half as many innings as he did in most other months. plus they started giving manny, ortiz and varitek more days off. it's a forward-thinking plan that can pay big dividends down the road.

I always wonder how this plays out in the clubhouse... do the coaches just decide this and then go to the players and tell them what the plan is? Do you think the players ever object? I mean, not that it matters, but there's always that stereotype that the "gamer" always wants the ball.
