I'm not sure who they'd replace him with. There are no adequate backup shortstops in the system.

Andres Blanco is batting .287 at Iowa...

Cedeno showed glimpses of being a solid player earlier in the year, but now he's right back to his old ways. He's swinging at tons of junk. Has to be pretty hard to have quality at-bats when you're not playing consistently though.

Reed Johnson doesn't seem to have a problem with it. Neither does Zambrano. There are plenty of people who do well in limited at bats.

Cedeno is terrible. I'm one of the most optimistic people out there, but I expect failure from him every time he bats. He's just a worthless player.

I wish Lou could ask him to go up there and take every pitch; he might have a better shot at reaching, sadly...

yeah, right.

He's a back up middle infiedler. They're not exactly renown for their offensive prowess. Hopefully they'll call up a RH hitter so they don't have to use Cedeno to PH in those situations.

I know. I was in and out of the room during that part of the game, and saw him up to bad and thought here comes an out. Sad to think that way.

Umm, okay?

He's the crappy 25th player that he, Theriot and Fontenot were all likely to be coming into the season. Thankfully, Cedeno is now the only crappy 25th man on the team.

at least nowadays we spend the minimum on our crappy 25th player and don't sign them to 1 million dollar contracts (jose macias).

cedeno's fine in his role on the team.

There's probably a worse shortstop available somewhere in the minors or on waivers that may not offend Cub fans as much as Cedeno. At least for a week or so.

meh whatever, he's fine. he was never good in the first place, but he can play solid defense at ss so that's good enough out of a backup infielder who can play both infield positions. he should hardly play at all in the playoffs.

I actually thought he had a good AB the other day (IIRC, it was Friday).

He doesn't play enough to significantly improve his nos. or his approach, IMO, and I am ok with that. He's a fungible commodity and gives them IF flexibility insomuch as he can play 3 positions pretty well. If we were relying on him for key late-inning AB's I'd be more concerned

In nit quite as crappy backup shortstop news, David Eckstein is sure to be delt by the waiver deadline, and the D Bags and Angels are the frontrunners to get him. Surely Hendry can swoop in and take him. Wouldnt cost too much, as the Jays have wanted to move him for some time now.

Backup SS OPS+ in the NL with my completely amateur judging of their D at SS on a scale of 1-10 in ().

NYM: Easley 83 (3)

PHI: Bruntlett 58(7)

FLA: Amezega 74(5)

ATL: Liilibridge 56(6)

WAS: Lopez 64(1)

CHI: Cedeno 78(7)

MIL: Counsell 71(4)

STL: Ryan 56(5)

HOU: Loretta 89(4)

CIN: Hairston 123(2)

PIT: Rivas 59(8)

AZ: Ojeda 76(9)

LAD: Furcal 168(5)

COL: Quintanilla 65(6)

SFG: Burris 81(??)

SDP: Rodriguez 75(??)

There are obviously glaring flaws with these #s because all I took were the #s of the player with the 2nd most Innings played at the position along with a few other quirks.

Obviously Furcal isn't LA's backup, and their "starter" Berroa has an OPS+ of 50. CIN's starter is Keppinger and he has a 70 with terrible defense. Felipe Lopez isn't even on the Nats anymore and so on and so forth. The better way to do it is probably to add up the #s of all guys logging innings as backups(don't know how to determine that exactly) and go with that, but I don't have P-I, and don't really know how else it could be done.

So what's the point in all of this? Backup SS suck! It's what they do. If you're a good backup SS, you're a starting SS. I touched on this when talking about "starting" SS, but Ronny has had a better year than 6! "starting" SS in the NL.
