so yeah, Santo basically pissed off a lot of the people who would eventually be voting. my prediction stands: he'll make it in the first vote after he dies. suddenly everyone will get a soft heart and feel bad for him. it's a shame, as they aren't voting him in now for his performance, and I don't think his numbers will be what gets him in after he dies.

So in a sense Leo Durocher is partly responsible for Ron not being in the Hall (it was Leo that suggested to Ron that he click his heels following home wins after Ron did it spontaneously the first time).

Ron Santo's Veteran Committee Results

2003 -- 56.8% (third highest on the ballot)

2005 -- 65.0% (tied for highest)

2007 -- 69.5% (highest)

In 2007 he was 5 votes short.

It really is a joke he isnt in. If the VC can't vote this dude in they are worthless.

5 votes short, and I have to imagine there were 5 veterans who never bothered voting

If they don't vote, their right to vote should be taken away.

A voter shouldn't have to vote for somebody if they don't feel anyone's qualified. There have been vet committee elections where there wasn't really a viable candidate. Forcing them to vote for somebody isn't the solution.

I believe Mike Schmidt said he never votes for anyone on the VC ballot because, and I'm paraphrasing, "If the writers didn't vote them in, then why should we?"

Yes Mike....spot on buddy, spot on. ](*,)

It should be noted that you need to be named on 75% of the ballots that are turned in. If someone does not turn in a a ballot, they are not used in determining the the 75% mark.

For a guy like Santo, it is much better that someone not turn in a ballot, as ooposed to turning in a blank one.

Yep, that's about what he said. He seemed concerned that voting people in would dilute the accomplishments of those already in. I believe he said that before the very first election after restructuring the committee.

the veterans' committee and the hall of fame expressed some disappointment and embarrassment after three straight votes with nobody being selected. maybe that'll convince some guys who were on the fence to vote for ronnie.

Then turn in a ballot that says "None of the above". At least you know they considered it.

As mentioned earlier the voting only tallies ballots that are turned in. If a voter doesn't turn in a ballot it's better for the candidates than a ballot that's turned in blank.
