Though the list of teachers who've come through the league over the 16 years of its existence is impressive, it's rare for a Hall of Famer to work an AFL dugout. But such is the case this season, with Cubs great Ryne Sandberg serving as a coach for the Mesa Solar Sox.

"The job was offered to me and I kind of checked it out and thought about it and said, 'Yep, that's something I can do,'" said Sandberg, currently the manager for the Cubs' Class A Midwest League affiliate, the Peoria Chiefs. "I have a home in Arizona, so I think that would be a good experience working with those players, guys from different organizations, older guys, being a coach."

I'd have to think he'd be the hitting coach, but that's just a guess.

And while we wait for her appearance, let me dust off this little chestnut...

My goodness, that Sandberg is a piece of work. Constantly arguing with umpires and getting ejected. He is so disrespectful. Minor league umpires hardly make any dolla billz. They're just da common working man and they have to deal with this jerk of a millionaire who never gives to charity and thinks his stuff don't stink.

I hope this arrogant, pompous, creep never manages in da bigs. Anyone who disrespects minor league umpires should be fired. da minor leagues are all about helping da kids become major leaguers. Then again, he never cared about his own kids - why should he care about others. Silly me.

Barry Bonds is an ANGEL compared to Sandberg da horrible.

I hate Ryne Sandberg.

The minor leagues are supposed to be about the young kids. Helping the kids become major leaguers. He's only out for himself, just like he always was. All he ever cared about was winning - winning - winning.

A real LOSER off-the-field too. No wonder he's headed for a second DIVORCE. LOUSY family man.

The Hall of Fame does not make you a good person. He let it go to his head. I hope to GOD he never ever manages the CUBS. I'll become a Whie Sox fan.

IT'S NICE TO BE IMPORTANT BUT IT'S MORE IMPORTANT TO BE NICE!!!!

possibly my all-time favorite NSBB rant.

Sandberg is my favorite player of all-time. That said, I'd rather he never coach for the Cubs again.

I agree, but it's nuts to make some blanket statement about him based on the Chiefs job.

He's written a few columns that have outlined his tactical thought process which is the main reason a few of us are not interested in him coaching the Cubs.

He can coach the Chiefs for the rest of his life if he wants. Most of those guys won't get past AA anyways, and the ones that do probably won't be too affected by 6 months of Sandberg.

Unless they sleep with his whore ex-wife I guess

I think in time he will find a middle ground that will work and make him a good coach. He was such a quiet player, and is such a vocal coach. Gotta find the happy place between those two at some point.
