I have this calendar that gives a Cubs fact or trivia every day, and todays was about Sosa's June of 1998. It mentioned that his Slugging was .842, so it got me thinking what his OPS was (or other relevant SABR stats), and where this month ranks within the greatest months ever by a batter.

Anyone think they can help?

In June of 1998, Sosa had a .331 OBP, to total a 1.173 OPS.

Barry Bonds, in 2002, had a 1.381 OPS for the year.

In that year, in August, Bonds had a .447 BA, a .621 OBP, and a .961 SLG to toal a 1.581 OPS.

his ops was 1.173 in june '98. while very good, it's not really close to being the best of all time.

consider sammy's august 2001, where his ops was 1.405 with a .936 slg. june '98 wasn't sammy's best month, even though it gets all the publicity.

Sosa had a .298/.331/.842/1.173 line that June. While quite impressive, considering there have been 30 players who have a higher OPS than that for an entire Season(including Sosa in 2001), I don't think it ranks that highly for greatest months for a hitter.

Without going through his entire career, Sosa's best month is probably August of 2001. .385/.469/.936/1.405.

Barry Bonds put up a .472/.696/1.132/1.828 line in April of 2004, that's probably up there for all time best months.

sammy's june '98 barely comes in the top 5 of most productive months sammy's had, believe it or not.

sammy's july 2000 was statistically better than june '98, where he put up a 1.175 ops.

may 2002 sammy put up a 1.202 ops. in august 2002 he put up a 1.202 ops again.

That was the best OPS month in history. Here are the other top months (as of 2004...I don't think anyone has had a month that good since then...anyone?): http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=2826

Thanks guys, I knew I could count on NSBB ;)

Im definitely suprised at how low his OBP was for that month, wouldve thought it to be a little higher...

Just goes to show how homeruns can mask other deficinies when youre 12, as I thought he had a monster month.

You don't hit 20 hrs in one month by taking alot of pitches...

Derrek Lee had a 1.171 OPS in June of 2005, just .002 points behind Sosa's June of 98

Ramirez had a 1.164 OPS in July of 2006

Posted

Lance Berkman had a 1.409 OPS in May of 2008

Alfonso Soriano had a 1.249 OPS in July of 2006

And whoever said that when you hit HRs en masse you are usually not taking a lot of pitches might be onto something as the months I've found are usually not the month that they hit the most HRs

It's also quite possible that Ted Williams (1.410 OPS in 1953, 1.400 OPS in 1952) or Babe Ruth (1.382 OPS in 1920, 1.358 OPS in 1921, 1.309 OPS in 1923) had months that good, but nobody has the split information that far back (BR has it as far back as 1956).

Williams only had 10 at bats in '52 and 91 in '53.

FINE, '41 THEN :P

Ted Williams, July of 1957: .440/.579/.893/1.472

Williams' September of '57 was unconscious, but he only got 33 PA.

Sosa's 2001 season is one of the more underrated seasons in baseball history. It was the same year as Bonds's single season home run record, and when people think "great season" and "Sammy Sosa" they think of '98. Sosa's 2001 season was vastly superior to his '98 season. It seems like a lot of people forget that season. I'll never forget his HR in the first game back after 9/11/2001 against Houston when he pulled a mini US flag out of his pocket as he circled the bases.

1998 .308/.377/.647 66 HR 20 2B 0 3B 73 BB 171 K

2001 .328/.437/.747 64 HR 34 2B 5 3B 116 BB 153 K

Sammy was fantastic until he forgot how to take walks and force pitchers to pitch to him.
