Iowa manager Pat Listach will be coach for the World Futures team. Iowa hitting coach Von Joshua will manage the I-Cubs in Listach's absence. Listach will also manage the PCL in the AAA All-Star game later this coming week.

Peoria Journal-Star[/url]"]ANY DAY NOW? It could only be a matter of time before Josh Vitters returns to Peoria.

The Chicago Cubs' top prospect has done nothing but hit while at short-season Boise and appears to finally be over the tendinitis in his hand that limited him to just four games with the Chiefs earlier this year.

Vitters was hitting .333 entering Friday's game.

Shortstop Ryan Flaherty, the Cubs' pick in the supplemental round in this year's draft, also is hitting above .300 in Boise.

SIGNING DAY: Now that first-round draft pick Andrew Cashner has signed with the Cubs, it is possible he, too, could be in a Chiefs uniform.

That day for the potential closer will likely be later this season rather than sooner.

Cashner will report to Mesa in the Arizona Rookie League before possibly heading to Boise. Although if Cashner really impresses the Cubs brass, a quicker jump to the Chiefs is not totally out of the question.

Cashner would prefer to stay a closer.

"I can move a lot faster (through the minors) that way, as a closer preferred to a starter," Cashner told mlb.com. "As a closer, you can be (in the majors) in a few year, rather than a lot longer as a starter."

The Cubs also signed second-round pick Aaron Shafer out of Wichita State.

Former position player Leon Johnson got the start for Mesa in his first appearance as a pitcher and threw a scoreless first. Tarlandas Mitchell made his pro debut and threw a scoreless 7th inning with a strikeout. Nelson Perez hit his 5th triple and 5th homer and John Contreras also hit his 4th HR.
